Deflex ?
« on: August 26, 2007, 05:40:00 PM »
I just done some expermenting with a set of limbs that came out too light. They are 43@28 on a 11& degree fade angle riser. Sooo I got to thinking   :bigsmyl:  What would happen if I made a riser with less fade angle. I made one with a 7% angle. That made the same limbs gain 9 lbs. at 28 ins. and uped the fps by quite a bit.
For you guys that have expermented with this how much can a person go and still be safe. I realize there will be a point that the limbs will start to stack sooner than with the old angle. They did stay smooth with the change. May be a way to up the performance for a short draw length.

Earlier this Spring I was experimenting with a 54" T/D recurve. I made the riser 15" instead of 19" so  I could use my standard 58" bow limbs. I went with 16 degrees compared to the standard 22 degrees just for curiosity. The bow stacks a little being so short at my draw, but is noticeably faster and I didn't have a failure.

Not really related just wanted to share my experiment, lol.

CS, you are becoming a bowyer!  :)  So what happens if you make the bow longer and or a shorter riser?? Could that counteract the stacking sooner?? What would reflexing/stiffening the tips more do? How much deflex does a "Hill" style bow have in it?? Deflex is anti"reflex" with each having opposite effects to each other....O.L.

Thanks O.L. Yeah I think I have most of it figured out. Just need to do some more expermenting to bring it all together.

im my limited expirience, less deflex will raise
the preload.
a bow with a good preload will be a good performer
AND smooth to pull.
of course leaving everthing else in the  design the same, the bow will stack earlyer and will have a higher draw weight.
but its preaty easy to counter act that.
the first thing i would do is play with taper.
riser length, working limp, how stiff the tips are.

in my opinion a bow with less deflex is what i want and build.

Could you devise a shim that would allow a 3 piece bow to change draw and or performance by adding the pre set angled shims between the limbs and riser?

Shims will work. They just have to match.
