Ghillie Poncho----help please.
« on: May 02, 2013, 09:53:00 AM »
I now have a ghillie poncho--long in front short in back[perfect].Please show me in pictures how to set it up for bowhunting.there are no sleeves, and I hope to have a system that takes under a minute to set up in.
If I put a strap around my chest I have problems with my arms.Do I cut the front all the way up to just below my chin, :  and just keep my arms in till the last second?

I use a Ghillie suit that I made myself from a Leafy-Wear suit as a base.  I think you need some sort of belt around your poncho to reign it in a bit.  Is it getting caught up in your string when your raising your bow to draw?  Is it all over the place?

Tie the sides all the way down leaving room for arm holes at the top. Then cut a slit in the back from the bottom up to your waste. When sitting it will drape over your legs like a blanket. tying the sides will also keep in close to your chest. Don't be afraid to trim off some of the chest stuff for string clearance.

When I put my poncho on now,and raise my arms;I look like an overweight flying squirrel.

What is an easy way to do something with the poncho to make sure either of my arms don't get tangled up in everything?

I know that belting and cutting arm holes will work; but then my arm will be uncovered, and not camoflaged.

The purpose of this type of concealment is to hide the man-shape you'd otherwise have.  Arms sticking out of a bush aren't going to spook an animal any more than branches sticking out of one. Sounds to me like you're pretty much there if you can shoot without having your burlap strips interfere with your release.  An overweight flying squirrel is definitely Not human in shape!

I have always been lucky that I never have needed an armguard or have the string hit my clothing, including my home made gillie poncho.

I used an elastic strap inside the front of the poncho that makes a loop I slide over my head as I slip it on.  The back is floppy but the front has a form fit.  Then I threaded a few loops of elastic through the left edge of the poncho that made the left side have a pseudo sleeve. Still easy to get in and out but it fits better and doesn't interfere with my string.
