Medical insurance/Evac for traveling hunters
« on: May 03, 2013, 08:30:00 AM »
Who are you traveling hunters using for medical insurance and evacuation from out of country destinations?  Heading to Newfoundland in the fall and need some type of insurance.  I currently get all my care through the VA so getting reimbursed out of country is really problematic.

I went to Argentina a few years ago and used Medex ....... now it's called Frontier Medex at   http://www.medexassist.com/Default.aspx   as an emergency provider for medical and evacuation costs.  I have no problem using them again unless there are other's available that other tradgangers are using.

I've done a search here and came up with a couple of names like Airmed and Medjetassist but they appear to be only evacuation services and will only 'advise' on health related events.

Considering that evacuation and transport alone back to the US could easily exceed $30,000 I find it cheap assurance/insurance.  Not to mention the costs to stay in a hospital.

So you international traveling bowhunters, what do you use?

Get ahold of Ray Hammond and he may be able to give you some info.

I think I recall Ted Fry posting a thread about him using one.

I'd also get ahold of Ray. He will probably be able to point you in the right direction.

I have used Travel Guard Insurance with good success.  I have had to cancel a couple of trips and received full refunds without any hassle.  I have never used the medical/evac coverage but I always pay a little extra to get the policy that provides evac to the hospital of my choice, anywhere I want to go.

Thanks Paul,

I take one or two out-of-the-country trips a year and have never purchased travel insurance and, knock on wood, never needed it.  I've always been willing to accept the risk with not having it as the potential loss wasn't life changing.  Medical or evacuation costs, on the other hand, can be severe.  I have had DAN insurance for years for my scuba trips but it is use specific and wouldn't cover hunting trips.  The costs for medical and evacuation insurance is only about $100 so it is very reasonable.

OK, I just found a source to compare plans, costs, benefits, reviews, etc.  That's what I need - thanks.  Paul, both Frontier and Travel Guard are on there so I can compare.

Pete, my only experience is with Travel Guard.  I use them to cover all trips.  Hunting, fishing, snorkeling, anything really.  They allow you to customize the coverage and provide a lot of extra coverage with all their policies such as lost baggage coverage, trip delay expenses, missed flights, etc.  if I'm not paying outfitter fees long in advance of the trip I do the same as you and just beef up the medical/evac coverage if I'm out of country.  If you find something that looks better I'd like to check it out.

The NRA has a plan for about $130. This includes your family.
