Question for 3D shooters

My son and I have been attending 3D shoots more frequently as of late.  Just a great way for us to spend some time together and we get to shoot our bows.

I was wondering though, what is the difference between the "traditional" class and the "instinctive" class.

I shoot my selfbow instinctivly.  I understand you could shoot a compound with fingers and no pins so am I in the "traditional" class then?

What do you think?  It really doesn't matter to me which class I'm in, just curious.

When I shot a lot of 3D,most of my local clubs were using IBO rules.But some clubs just put on 3D shoots and they had their own rules for classes.I shot a 3D course down in Georgia when visiting with my brother,their rules were alittle different then up here in Ohio.The rules have changed quite a bit over the years and there are more classes for the Traditional shooter.I would ask the club you are shooting at and see if they follow any national archery rules like IBO or ASA or their own?

I cant remember the exact terminology used at the last shoot I went to, but they had 2 classes that were similar to what you stated. I was told the difference was, traditional meant just that, barebow and wooden arrows. the other class was barebow, but using carbon or aluminum arrows.

Years ago around here they had a Bare bow class, no sights, any arrow, any bow. At that time I shot a recurve and I shot with guys with compounds and no sights and fingers. I even won a few times....lol!

I haven't heard it broke down like that but I do like the idea of "barebow" (no sights any arrow) and traditional (no nothing but a bow string and wood arrows)

A traditional only shoot we went to recently had three classes:
Longbow
Recurve
Selfbow
I could be mistaken but I think wood arrows were required for the longbow class. If anything else was used you got lumped into recurve. Selfbow was wood arrows only or be in the recurve class.

Thanks for the input guys.  I would think recurves and longbows and selfbows are all shot instinctivly anyway.  I suppose a recurve can have pins on it and a compound can be shot without them.  Oh well, I'll chalk it up to practice and try to get my kill shots.  Meanwhile I'll keep buying lunch afterwards!

I shoot a lot of 3D and most clubs have recurve  or longbow class all must shoot fingers no sights any kind of arrow. and some clubs have trad hybrid r/d longbows and recurves any kind of arrow and longbow D shape longbow when strung (HH style most common)and must shoot wood arrows. then some clubs have a primitive class all wood bows and self nocking wood arrows. just depends on the club
