Appreciate the help Gordon, heard from 3rivers my stuff shipped today!


any insight on how to get a white cap on the tail end with out using white GL? is there any kind of straight paint that I can use after the first coat of GL to get a nice white crown dip? (or crown spray) that I can then go over with GL?

I've done all my cresting over GL with Testor's enamel.  Cresting holds up well on top of GL.

I have a little beef with GL though.  I shoot a lot of targets with my arrows and the GL tends to get milky up front where the shaft heats up from friction.  It shows up worse with the ebony stain I like to use.

Plus, GL doesn't do well with moisture.  I live in Southeast AK and it rains all the time.  GL and a lot of repeated rain exposure don't mix well.

When I make my next set, I'm probably going to switch to Daly's Pro Fin.  I've heard that stoff works well.

Sorry L.R., I don't have any suggestions on the white cap dip and for some reason, I haven't had very good luck with white GL. I once tried some chartreus (sp) latex paint under GL and I couldn't keep my feathers on using duco cement.

Dan, and Gordon- here are my crested shafts. All of them have been dried now for 4 days. I dont know why I am sweating dipping them in the lacquer-

you are using the speed coat dipper cap right? the rubber gasket that strips off most of the laquer after ya dip the arrows?

just hoping I dont have a bunch of issues!

Dang it L.R., you have got me a little nervous too!!!  
I do use the gasket.  Here's what I do.  I take the arrow and quickly dip just past the cresting the first time.  I'm sure if you let the cresting set very long in the gasket lacquer it will dissolve the cresting paint. Also I have had problems with thinned gasket lacquer.  The acetone will make the cresting run.  I just made up 42 arrows with very fine cresting lines and they came out great and I hope yours will too. Let us know how it turned out.     :pray:

I use the ecodipper gasket that attaches to the side of the GL can and drips the excess back in the can. I dip the tip end into the unthinned GL (you don't need too much) and pull it through quickly. Let dry 15 minutes and repeat. Relax! its supposed to be fun.

It's only fun when things work out according to plan. When you start to see problems it can become un-fun very quickly.
Believe me, when you've got someone waiting on a set of arrows and you see the cresting smear down the shaft, it is un-fun.

Grabbed one and said what the heck- stuck it in tail first just past the arresting and pulled it back out, no problem! Did 3 more after that- need to move some arrows around to et them all done. EZPZ- no runs, perfect cresting!

Grey, not sure what your remark means. I build bows and arrows for fun. I'm not a professional. I have blown up bows, designed and built forms that were inferior, smeared arrow cresting,  cut arrows and lams too short, cut sight windows on the wrong side, gotten inumerable cuts, abrasions and splinters and loved every minute of it. I can spend 12 hours in my shop without a break and not once think about the stresses of everyday life. That's why I do it. I stress over the important stuff and arrows ain't that big a deaI. Advice was solicited and I contributed because I have relevant experience. I'm beginning to wish I had not....
