The "lane"

Delete if not appropriate.
After a bit of bush hogging this evening I headed up the lane on my old tractor towards the house, when some fond memories of special times spent with my Pop, who has been gone many a year, flooded my mind.
To many it may look like just another lane, but for me, every yard of it reminds me of many a morning and evening, walking together with my Pop, planning tactics, sharing successes and the telling of events, that unfolded after going our separate ways, on our hunts in the woods just beyond.
Even though my Pop was'nt a bowhunter, he always supported me in my efforts as a bowhunter and always had the confidence that I could be successful in this journey, and spent much quality time teaching me the skills that would help to make me successful, as well as the love of the outdoors.
Quality time spent with young ones is invaluable and helps to insure the future of the hunting sports as well as solidifying the relationships between family and friends, while at the same time creating memories that time cannot erase.

If any of you have a " lane" so to speak, please share.

P.S Thanks Pop, for quality time well spent, as your teaching and confidence have come to fruition many times over, in my successes as a person and as a bowhunter.

I have a lane, it's where my son shot his first deer.  You bet I ride or walk it every time I'm around.

I have a lane leading from house to the swamp. I walked it before my house was there with my Granddad. My Dad was killed in an accident when I was 10 My "Papa" raised me. We would fish for "JackFish" and speckled cat. Take the shotguns for squirrels and wood ducks. Papa did`nt deer hunt as we had very few then here. On this same lane in the 60`s there were Wisconsin Whitetails put out maybe 50 yards from where my home is.Gods country. Good one Moleman.RC

I went to see one of my "lanes" not long ago.

I had to go to a funeral of a dear old friend in a small South Arkansas town where I spent a large part of my youth, hunting the "pear orchard", the "hog lot", and , in general, living a very carefree existence. My oldest sister had married the man who was to become like a brother to me and my younger brothers. Many years have since gone by and they moved to North Arkansas 30 years ago. That sister and her husband both died within 10 months of each other 2009-2010 way too young. I had not been back to their old home place in the South in those 30 years. I now drove slowiy through the old neighborhood to the home place and looking at the tree where my first buck was hung up to skin and  with the old barn where we used to have "rat killins" still there..... After hearing a honk, I realized that I was stopped blocking the, since then, paved road. You see, it used to be just a lane. I backed up and along side of me pulled up the honking pickup. The old man was about 90. I told him who I was and that I was reminiscing. It turns out this old man was someone who I remembered from my childhood days. He seemed old back then, but now had earned his title for sure. We talked for a while and sort of "caught up". He knew my sister and bro in law and said how much he liked them, which really meant a lot to me to hear, and one by one, we talked of the ones who are dead and gone who played such a part in my life. That side of the road visit was very helpful to me. If I had to say why, I guess its because it confirmed that my loved ones really existed and it was not just a dream.

We had to cut it short to make it to the funeral in time.

Lin,

Thank you for bringing the memories to the forefront.  My "lane" is a piece of property that I hunted for years with a dear and special friend, Dale.  Tragically, Dale died in a single car accident last November, just before firearms season.

Needless to say, I was devastated.  Although I had (and still have a standing invitation) to the properties that Dale owned, it is still hard to deal with.

Thank you for bringing all the good memories to the fore-front.

Time heals all wounds, but it is the memories (good and not so good) that make a life.

God bless!

Our "lane" would be a logging road at my parents cabin.  It pretty much runs through the middle of the property and we use it to access stands, turkey blinds, talk about past and future hunts and just plain enjoy the outdoors.  Here's a picture of my dad (Bernie B here) and my oldest son on a stumping outing.

Here's another "lane" shot of both my boys on another stumping outing.  Great memories!

"Our" lane is many a headlane in the cane fields that we hunted 40 years ago freely. Sadly, all these fields are off limits these days. Cherish the freedom of hunting farmland freely, because it is now non exitent here

Great pics JJB, looks like some priceless bonding, planning and enjoyment happening there.
At some point those youngins will use the phrase
" I remember when" while lamenting stories of hunts gone by and will appreciate and love the the outdoor sports, simply because those around them took the time to point the way.
