New Bow
« on: July 08, 2013, 02:44:00 PM »
I currently shoot a 45lb Savannah. I would like to get something different,a bit more weight, and something cut to,or at least quite close to center. I have a local guy who has a Mc Cullough Griffin, but I am concerened about it being only 60". My Savannah is 62,and from what I have learned, longer is easier to draw, and finger pinch can be an issue. I would like some thoughts on what you guys think.  Thanks

Well I don't have a Griffin, so can't directly speak for them, but I have a 56" Shrew Classic Hunter..the Griffins are in a way an interpretation of the Shrew design..so many similarities.  Shrews are known for handling long draws...especially the Classic Hunter with its 12" riser section.  I can personally testify to that, my 56" handles my 29+ draw easily and comfortably.  I think the Shrews and Griffins with longer riser sections as long as overall length is longer like this 60" or more should handle longer draws fine, and finger pinch should not be an issue at all.  I'm fairly certain going down 2" you will be just fine..but wait for some guys who have shot Griffins to chime in for sure.

PS:  yes as a general rule of thumb longer bows feel smoother to draw, but bow design is the no.1 factor...that's why the Shrews..and I believe Griffins also can handle longer draws at a shorter length...its the design.

Grab the Griffin immediately.  McCullough's Griffins are made to accomodate a longer draw length than you would immagine. I had one and drew 30" with a 60 inch and had no pinching whatsoever.  The reason I sold it was I had to drop poundage because of a bad shoulder.  I am looking for another. They are great shooting bows.

What's your draw length?  A Griffin is a much more deflex/reflex bow than the Savannah so could probably go shorter in that design.    If your draw length is 28 inches or less, probably no problem going a few inches shorter.  if it's longer than 28 inches, I'd recommend a longer bow as well.  Folks with long draw lengths do shoot short(er) bows, but they must be impervious to finger pinch.  As I've already noted, bow design has a lot todo with how smoothly a bow draws as well as finger pinch.  Finger pinch also seems to be less if one shoots three under.  Lots of variables to consider.  Best if you can try the bow you want to buy to determine for yourself if it works for you.  Good luck.

The McCullough Griffin is awesome! If he is willing to part with it I would definitely buy it. It is a slick bow!
