Best Cane/Bamboo for Shafts?

I want to build some cane arrows. What's the best kind of cane/reed/bamboo to use for shafts? Does it matter what time of year you harvest it? Any help and info would be appreciated.

I've found most cane is OK, but the best ones I built the leaves grew on alternating sides. I found it growing near shallow water in southern Mississippi. Another interesting thing was that if you stripped those leaves and such even green they burned like gasoline. Can't tell you the exact species though.

Drewster, Are you in North Western North Carolina? If so cut hill cane(Arundaneria appalaciana). It is the native cane that grows along creeks here in the mountains of NC. It makes great arrows, some say it is the best.
