Okies Help, MCAAP?
« on: July 15, 2013, 12:55:00 PM »
So I got drawn in for Big Mac this year. Hunting  Hominy Oct.25-27 and I need information.  Anyone hunted here before?  What areas are good?  Any advise will be appreciated. I hunted Deer Creek twice and have good info on it if anyone needs it. Super excited to get back out there this is such a fun unique hunt.  Thanks in advance for your time. FYI I lived in Oklahoma(Tahlequah) almost my whole life so dont let the Texas location keep the info from flowing.

trout guide, I first hunted Mac in Hominy about ten years ago, tagging along with another group. They selected an area near a dump area, we were east and north of it. That year was normal for precip and the bunkers were well seeded and full of growth. Consequently the deer, especially the does during daylight, hit them hard. Unfortunately I was pretty green, slow and hesitant and ran out of time before I figured out I better quit goofing off and do something. I remember it being the farthest drive out from camp so we had to load and leave first. It was a hustle Sat. morning, I stayed up way past my bedtime.  When the weathers fair and them big deer are out MAC is fantastic. Good Luck

A few years ago I shot a buck (nothing on the Most Wanted list) right behind the bunker just North and East of the intersection of Road A and Road 7. There is a little creek. With all this rain it might be a river now. There were some big oaks back there and the woods kind of pinched down behind the bunker. I saw deer there multiple times (and a big hog).

My advice: forget wasting time walking far off the road. Look for acorns, a pinch point in the woods and hang a stand. I wouldn't care if it's spitting distance from the road or an ammo bunker.

I've got a digital copy of the hunt map if you want it for use with Google Earth/Maps.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you want the map.

Since I always find deer on persimmons, persimmons are typically what I look for first hunting in unfamiliar places that only allow a couple of hours to make a setup. approx 270-280 hunters every week stir the ground up.
At Bear Creek one year I found deer hold up on a treed knoll with one narrow descending treed ridge into a hollow. They were smart deer, held the high ground with open ground firebreak on one side and prevailing wind on the other. Fleeting glimpses of those rascals was the best I could do. They had done that drill before and if they have a since of humor they were chuckling I'm certain

I have hunted Hominy a few times.  Like above, don't try to spend your time getting way off the roads.  I don't know that there's a bad spot out there. I bleated at one that was trotting right under my stand a few years ago.  It just made him run faster.  By November, these deer have dealt with lots of hunters.  Hunted down around 23AT (i think) one year.  Couple of the guys in our group had found persimmon trees.  They saw a lot of deer.  I wasn't over persimmons, but I saw a few nice bucks while hunting on a creek.
