What is a good traditional back quiver
« on: July 18, 2013, 12:15:00 AM »
Been looking for a back quiver, but cant find one that just right. Im really liking the crimean tartar or the scythian quiver, but im not sure how they will hold up. I dont do horseback and im just looking for a nice looking traditional back quiver that isnt over 100 dollars, the cheaper the better. Just wondering if anybody has used these and if theyre worth the money. Also any information on where to find good traditional back quivers would be helpful.

3Riversarchery.com has some nice basic selections.  Some are ready to go, some are DIY kits.  If youre handy, this is a nice one, I've got it, not super hard to put together.  The leather on this one is really nice and thick yet flexible:

Or there's this one:

They have a few other basic leather quivers that are handsome and are ready to use if you don't feel like putting it together yourself.

WidowEater has one in the classifieds here.

What do you want in a back quiver? Are you looking for something that sits high on the back that's kept in place with a second strap? Something freely moved while hunting? Something that hangs low, almost like a plains style? What type of service do you want this quiver to provide?

I bought my 11 yo son a button buck shoulder quiver from kids section at black widow leather feels great and I think size would easily fit me.  $40 I think would be great place to start and see what you like in a back quiver.  When done it looks good enough to display some nice wood arrows in a man room

M.A.L.  ......great stuff!  Super quality!  If you have to wait a short bit for it,   its worth every second and every penny.  I have a hip quiver Ive had for 4 or so years now....it's awesome!

Im really curious to know if anybody has seen or actually used a scythian or tartar type quiver before, it is kind of the style im leaning towards. And im curious if theyre even usable if that makes sense

Yes, yes and yes.  But, they aren't anything like what we generally see used around here. A lot of those quivers say back and were most often used on the belt from horseback.  I found them too short for comfortable back use.  I do like the bow quivers, however.

In the interest of fairness, my shortest arrow is still over three feet long.  Many people that are of smaller stature or who shoot shorter draw lengths (my bow supports up to 36", which is a comfortable draw for me) may find it more useful.  I turned to making my own.
