What weight arrow does your Widow like to eat? (POLL)
« on: September 02, 2007, 09:05:00 PM »
What grain-per-pound arrow does your Widow recurve prefer?  I'm looking for overall "shootability" including what makes a nice stable, quiet, and reasonably quick setup.

Primary game here is whitetail or hogs...

The spec's on mine are 64" PMA II, 53@30", 2007 model year.  It will be here in a few days; I'm presently working up an arrow combo...but have yet to order shafts.

If you happen to know, please post the speeds and/or subjective "quietness" of your setup.

Thanks for your input!!
Marc

...from the Q & A on Black Widow's web site:

Quote
Q: “How much arrow weight should I have?”

A: We recommend at least 9 – 11 grains per pound of bow weight. (You must use at least 8 grains per pound on all Black Widow bows in order to be covered by warranty)

Jeff,
There's a large difference in a bow's particular reaction between 8 and 11gpp.

I'm looking for some real-world setups.

Thanks,
Marc

Black Widow, or any misc bows. Will shoot with in reason, lightest recommended in your opinion ( or theres) or the heaviest in your opinion. Granted you have the correct spine weight that will bareshaft tune our of your bow.

So you must chose do you want heavy or light? And buy your shafts by that standard. I personally like 10-12grs per inch.

My PGA @51 lbs like's Easton XX78 2114's 30 1/2" with a 195 grs up front total weight 505 'grs. Good luck with the new widow!

                   Brent

So I did not vote, weight means only something if.(TO ME)
Its at around 10 grs per pound and not over 14, so pick one of each for me.lol

Shoot what you want,  but if your gonna use that FF string you're better off shooting a heavier arrow - 10 or 11 grains per pound of draw weight...

If you are drawing a full 30" and if  you were to use a 14 strand B50 dacron string, the perfect arrow for you would be a X7/XX78 2114 30 & 3/8"  long, w/ 145 - 150 gr point and 4x5" fletchings @ 90 degrees - I know because that's EXACTLY what I shoot off my 1999 64" AO MA 1 piece which draws 52#@30".

The arrow comes in at @517 gr finished and weighs in @ 9.9 gr per pound of draw weight. It ain't super fast (165 - 170 fps) but it is super stable and super accurate and super consistent.

If you gotta shoot that FF string,  then the same set up in a 2117 ought to do you right.

All that said,  BY ALL MEANS do the bare shaft tuning exercises per the BW TNT Video which comes with your bow.  It will be well worth the investment of time and effort.  TRUST ME!

PS  Using 2 sets of wooly whispers and the Dacron string makes my bows WHISPER quiet.
The toughest thing I've found about deer hunting is getting them to hold still long enough for me to stick an orange spot on them and then step off the yardage...

Thanks much fellas!

TG--That setup shooting nearly 10gpp, even with a dacron string, does sound nice and stable.

However, even though I'm not a speed freak, it sounds very slow for a 30" draw.  Are those numbers from a chrono?

I was reading up on the posts on the widow wall and didn't read a single one below the 180's with 10gpp.

Thanks Much,
Marc

I've two B/W's that will shoot the same arrows great. I have a 97 SA11 46#@28" 58" that shoots a 450grn arrow 55/75 30.5" long at 191 fps.
I bought a new PMA11 that will shoot the same arrow its 51#@28" 58", it shoots 195 fps.
SSWV can get more speed out of my bows than i can for some reason? He can really get a smooth release. He got 199fps out of my new PMA.
I can't figure out how he does it...

I don't worry about the speed, but it sounds nice!  :archer:

Larry,
Thanks much for that input.  Those numbers correlate to what I was reading on the Widow Wall.

What size tips are you shooting in those 55/75's?

Take Care,
Marc

I shoot 52# at 28" TF widow and have found the now defunct 1918 aluminum arrow best for me.  With a 125 grain Stinger, total weight is about 490 grains putting me at almost 9.5.

I shoot a PSA V 62" 53# @ 30". I shoot a 31 3/4" 2117 legacey with 200 Grqains up front. It weights in at 625 grains. This gives me 11.8 grains per lb. The last time i crono'ed it it was in the mid 180's I think it was 188 i cant remember.

Wow thanks for all of the tips guys--it does sound more and more like the Widows want that stiffer spine.

Larry--those carbon must be relatively heavy to give you 450gr with only 125 up front?

Thanks,
Marc
