tapering and barrel tapering??

Do wood shafts have to be tapered?  If you do taper them, what is better, tapering one end or barrel tapering?  Can you get good results from parallel shafts?  Thanks, Jonathan

canadian:
Tapering a shaft allows it to overcome paradox quicker. Do they have to be tapered no, however a tapered shaft is more efficient. An arrow that overcomes paradox faster will shoot flatter and have more remaining energy at the target.
