help with arrow making

Its been while since I made some wood arrows and I have gone brain dead on the orientation of the grain.
Is the grain to be up and down like the string of the bow or side to side? Which way would provide the stiffer spine?

Make certain that the rift is on top, pointing away from you.

Maybe this will help...when you look at your shafts you should see what looks like contour lines on a map. They should be forming vee's. Those vee's should be pointing away from you.

why is that. I was told it once before but I forgot.

If you put the rift backwards and the arrows breaks on release chances are good you shaft will go through your hand. Put it foward and it more than likely will not.

I read this in T.J. Conrads book sometime ago and it has stuck with me since.
