Dan,
My son's name was Jesse, just FYI.  As far as function after the fall I think a climbing harness would be better.  The advantage a "hunting" harness with the chest straps and back clip has is during the fall, especially if you fall asleep on your stand and do a head first pitch off the stand.  With the back clip you can move around well and not have much slack so you don't fall as far and your head doesn't swing around much.  Having said that I make sure my tie-off is overhead and I don't have a lot of slack when seated.  I expect to get bruised a bit during a fall as I am whipped around to face the tree but keeping the tie-off rope tight insures I won't have much movement or jerk during the fall.  I'll be able to easily hug the tree or safely get back on stand afterwards.  The front attachment can be in the way sometimes and you have to be sure not to "tink" the beener with anything and alert deer.  When I started using my harness there weren't any of these newer type chest harnesses, only belts, and I was climbing anyways so I had year round useage and they help hanging stands as well so I continue to use them.  I would "practice" with one of the newer style harnesses to see if you could flip yourself around if hanging before being faced with that situation 20' up in the air.

BTW there's another website that has actual video demonstrations of a guy falling out of his stand with a "Seat of the Pants (SOP)" vest and HSS vest. I can PM the link to you if you're interested or Google "We demonstrate actual falls by jumping off a treestand to test two popular harness-vests".
