Hunting on Quantico MCB, VA?
« on: August 21, 2013, 03:24:00 PM »
Good afternoon gents!

I just got stationed at Quantico, VA and am looking to try to hunt whitetail here on base this fall.

Anybody hunted here before that could point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,

Shan

p.s. lots of deer running around this place! And whats up with the urban hunting season?? Never seen anything like that!

Been to long since I was there, 19 years.  Look into Fort Belfort also.

Always wanted to when my Sister lived in Stafford.  Never got a chance to though.  Now they're stationed in Hawaii.

I hunted the 9a and b every chance I got.  Do not know what they call them now.
My secret there was to get a training area map and find a good atea near the center of the area.  Terrain, feed sources and ease of getting in to it all played.  The average guy there wanders up and down the emergency access roads. They move deer all day long and a strategically placed stand produced action for deer and turkeys throughout the day.  Many of the roads that were on the perimeter were locked, walk in access only.  Used a bike to get in and to take deer out.
Been 20 years, but I hunted it during TBS, and tours at HQMC and staff college instructor tours.  The areas in 9 produced for me during 70's, 80's and 90's

Mr.Polak,

That is awesome! I just showed up for Fox Co. last week and while training will be my focus, I definitely want to go hunting on the weekends.

It appears that area 9a is now an "Impact Area" for ordinance but 9b is still open. I have done some "scouting" (Land Nav) and it looks like most areas on base are pretty torn up with activity. Thanks for the tips, that is awesome that you were getting it done back then. Hopefully I can be successful as well.

Thanks again, will look into 9b.

My footlocker may have a map or two, or you can send me one and I can circle spots to check out.  I hunted the 10 areas too, but concentrated on the 9. I drove out on the perimeter and parked at the gate,  went up the road, an easy but steady up hill.  Just before the crest, I stashed the bike and went in.  I can probably navigate to the tree to this day.  Lots of oaks up along there and you can find some used game trails to set on

I hunted there in the 70's and 80's as a non military and it was a pain, as you never knew if you could get a good area. But I think back I was also always hoping for 9A or 9B. As it always held deer and had movement most of the day.I also would suggest if you can get permission to do some pre hunting scouting.
