The new Fred Bear Kodiak 59 ?
« on: August 23, 2013, 07:08:00 AM »
Hi guys has any one shoot the new kodiak 59   from Bear, and if so how does it shoot ? from pictures it looks like the shelf is flat ?
also is it cut to center ? or slightly past i like 1/8 past i prefer slightly past .
i did shot a super kodiak some weeks ago for the first time and was surprised how well i could shoot it .smooth draw quiet and stable for such a short and light bow . and about half the price of my custom bows ..
 thx cody
ps sorry for bad spelling i live in australia but originaly from sweden

The new kodiak 59er is outstanding.  One of the nicest recurves you will shoot.

One of the finest shooters I have had.  The shelf on mine looks to be cut to center or just barely past--ageing eyes don't you know!  The shelf is flat just like Fred made them back when....they come with a feather rest which I didn't think I would like but I love it.

To tell you how closely they have copied the original, when I spoke with Neil Byce III (son of Fred's head bow maker) who is Bear's production manager and fine guy to talk with, I mentioned the direction the leather wrap on the grip is overlapped.  I thought it might work better if it was overlapped the other direction--Neil said, "That's the way Fred did it."  If you get the chance to take a look at both right and left handed models, you will note that the wrap is done in the opposite directions on them--just like Fred did it.  That says a lot to me about Bear's attention to detail in matching as closely as possible the original style.

Has anyone with monkey arms, such as myself, shot one?
Just wondering how they are at 30" plus draw length..

I draw 29" and it's smooth as butter--I don't think an extra inch will matter. In fact, if I overdraw it no stacking happens at around 30"--at least none that I can feel.

There is a long discussion regarding the bow in the Collector area.

And here's why it's all subjective.....  and my opinion is worth less than a cup of coffee but here goes.

I draw 29 inches.  29.5 if I'm all limbered up. I felt that the bow stacked at the last inch.  It was a 45# bow and that last inch just did not feel comfortable...All of my 60" Widows are very comfortable and feel like I could just keep on pulling and not stack..

And upon the shot, I thought it had a lot of hand shock.  But again...I shoot Widows which are heavy riser bows.  The 59'er is just a thin little stick.  So yes....it will vibrate in the hand much more so that a heavy riser bow.

So does it stack and exhibit hand shock?  Well....for me it did and for that reason, I did not buy one.

For somebody else...hey...it may draw and shoot like a dream.  Obviously for some...it does.

The answer is you gotta just try one.  You don't want to drop the coin on one and feel the way I did about the bow.

Otto has it right for me. I shot one and I draw 28.5"s and I drew it too my cheek which gets me 30"s and it stacked quite a bit for me. I bet it gained 4-5#s per inch past 28.5"s. It shot very nice for me but again was a bit shockey to me, as Otto said it is light. I have shot and owned a few original 59's and this bow is pretty much a carbon copy to me at least. Shoot one before you buy and see what you think before you plop down a big chunk of change for one. Shawn

I only know two things about them:

1: THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL

2:  I'D LIKE TO HAVE ONE!
