Sitka-HOLY COW!
« on: August 23, 2013, 10:53:00 AM »
So I asked for advice about pants for elk season in a previous thread and got some great suggestions.  I ended up finding a pair of ascent pants in forest camo for $80 and I pulled the trigger.
I can't ever find anything that fits but these things are amazing!  Hands down the best camo pants that I have ever had on this rear end so far.  I think these pants will be great all season with the right under layer.  THIS JUST COST ME A LOT OF MONEY!  I am going to have to sell everything else.

I really like my Ascent pants.  Don't know about using them for cold, but my 90% handle that part.

They are the most comfortable pants I own. Love that they don't bind when climbing.

I went all Sitka Gear over the past 3 years. I wish I could get the solid color pants just for every day year they fit so great. They run out of many sizes in just a few months though.

Hoping to find a pair on the rack (clearance, 50% off, take what you need ...)     after the seasons finish this year.

So, size wise, just go with your regular pant size? As opposed to "running small or large for size".

Tom, many, MANY years ago, the Sitka stuff was sized a little small.  They have that all squared away now.  The pants fit exactly like a pair of Wranglers IMO.

One thing that is important when you buy Sitka stuff.  It is NOT supposed to be loose and baggy like we have been conditioned over all these years of buying clothes to hunt in for range of motion.  They are designed to stretch and move with you.

Once you climb a mountain in Ascent, Mountain, or Timberline pants, you will never wear anything else.

I tried to find a pair of solid Ascent pants last week...no chance!

Steve,
Does this hold true for the tops also? I tried on the Stratus jacket last week and it felt small like it wasn't true to size.

Mark, IMO, yes.  I am an XL in everything.  It may have been what you had on under it.  Most guys that don't like Sitka are the ones that have tried a piece or two.  It is a SYSTEM and it is all built to layer together.

I've been tinkering, buddies like both kuiu and Sitka and a new kid on the block, Kryptek a local fairbanksan owned buiz.

But honestly the stuff costs as much or more than my wool and I can barely use it for half to 2/3 the season.   Is a pair of stretch pants that great?   If so marmot makes a pair as does a few other companies for 100 bucks.  They dry quick, but have very little warmth,  Great for hot season stuff I reckon.   Mind you I climb trees (treestands)...stalk, hike, climb sheep mts etc and play in the lower 48 regularly.

The price tag imho doesn't justify it especially as a system when that system is going to run you 1000-1500 bucks to get completely in it.

Its great gear....but holy heck man is it lined with gold thread?!?!?!  I cringe at the price of good wool and you can easily get into KOM or any of the higher end wool for the same price is the big 3 synthetics on the market.   Not saying one is better than the other, but I do believe if I was going to dump that kind of money I'd opt for high end wool over high end synthetic.
