Opening Day Happenings
« on: September 05, 2007, 07:07:00 AM »
While reading the thead on Mi Deer Camp scouting I started to think back on all the opening days of bow season I have had in my 52 years of bowhunting. Like the opening day in Pa that I was so sick I could only hunt for about a hour or the opening day on Drummond Island,Mi when I shut the car door on my bow tip and broke it off and had to drive to Fred Bears factory in Grayling for a new bow, or the year our car broke down in Gaylord,Mi going to Drummond Island and we missed opening day,or the opening day in WV I got my International Scout sunk up to the frame on a beaver dam, or the big snow storm in WV on opening day. I have also had many many relaxing and great opening days with a lot of my old hunting buddies. These are examples of some of my opening day happening. I would not trade these memories for anything.  Whats some of yours...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside thoroughly used up, totally worn out, with bible in hand and loudly proclaim...WOW...What a Ride!!!

I remember the day my buddy set the alarm & I woke to birds singing & sun shinning & then running around grabbing gear & a road race to the hunting spot. He didnt seem concearned but to me not being on stand as the sun came up on first morning was a big deal.  I got skunked & he shot a nice 6 pt about 3pm???  Go figure.  Mike

One year my Dad and I were working on our hunting property getting it ready for opening day of bowseason.  At lunch the guy at the counter, seeing our camo work clothes, asked us if we had any luck.  We told him the season opened next week and he told us it opened today.  We checked our regs.... We had somehow gotten our weeks mixed up! We had our bows but only had field points with us.  We scrounged around and found enough broadheads for two arrows apiece and set up for the afternoon hunt.  Unfortunately two arrows were two more than we needed.

Opening day PA sitting on a steep    :scared:  mountain side over looking the Delaware river. It was well below zero, wind coming up off the cold river, snowing tiny flake so thick couldn't see too far.  Then there was the one in NJ it was just around freezing with rain and fog. Lips so chapped the skin was hanging off... 'nuff of that one.
I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.
