Every day we see "What Broadhead?" I may have the answer!

Let me start out by saying I have 40 plus years in archery. I have used different broadheads through the years 2,3,and 4 blade styles. Last 20 so years I have used 2 blades with great success. I just found what I think could be the best broadhead design I have ever used. I got some Grizzly broadheads from Bill at Zipper Bows. We conducted a test comparing the Grizzly broadhead to my favorite 2 blades and some of the others favorites. All but one other was a double bevel. No! im not going to mention the other broadheads by name but you can probable guess them. They have been some of the most respected traditional broadheads on the market for years..The test was conducted using 2 inches of rubber horse mat.
The same bow and arrow weight was used. All broadheads were within 5 grains of each other. The broadheads were shot into the horse mat at all different angles. The broadhead that performed above the others was the Grizzly.This may not be a surprise to many of you. This maybe a great advantage to those that shoot the lighter weight bows. This test may not be the most scientific but I do think it was a accurate comparison. No! I dont  make a habit of testing broadheads. But I do make a habit of testing bows. I was very impressed in the Grizzly broadhead. Let me also add it shot great and was very easy to sharpen. Im not one for posting all the hi-tech. I personal enjoy reading and posting about hunting. Just thought this personal test I would share. Hopefully I can put a Grizzly through a bull in mid-October.

I have a rubber horse mat as my backstop. Occasionally, I purposely shoot broadheads into it (and sometimes by accident, haha). The Grizzlies went through it and through my wooden slats on the fence.  Other 2 blades went through it but stopped before they hit the fence.

I always tell my sons that a sharp broadhead in the right place will solve a lot of problems.

I got some 185 grain grizzley heads from Bill also. The grind was very easy to finish off to sharp edge. Many of the heads I received already had a burr on the edge.

I received some wood arrows from Snag and I was looking for the right head- more so for a good tuned arrow.  I tried a 135 grain, 145 grain and 160 grain broad head. Snag said I needed 180 grain heads with these arrows and he was right.

They seem to be a very solid broad head.  I hope to let you know how they perform in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the info on the head, but what I really want to know is how does that horse matt work out for a broadhead target?  I have been using one for a back stop and thinking about cutting one up and stacking 4 layers for a broadhead target.  They are not that costly.  I would be interested in how you cut it and if you glued it or something.   Also how well does it work to remove arrows?

I use them as back stops too. They come 4x8 so I cut it in to half and double it making a 4x4. They work great. Field points come out very easy. Broadheads are a bit tougher. I think they work great.

That's good to know. I bought some 120's and going to use a 75 grain adapter.

Great broadheads. Bill Dunn has done a great job of improving the Grizzly broadheads. I really like the 160's I picked up from Bill in June. Tough as nails, and very easy to sharpen !!!

This is great news to me, Michael.  I have been trying to decide which broadhead to use and the Grizzlies have a great reputation, especially since the take over by Zipper and the grinding by KME.  

What interests me the most about your post is your mention of Grizzlies with lighter weight bows.  I shoot 40# Hill-style longbows and finding a suitable broadhead concerns me.  Why do you think the Grizzlies will perform well at light weights?  Did you test them with a lightweight bow?  If so, what was the draw weight?  And what method did you use to get them hunting sharp?  Thanks.

I have just placed an order with Snag for some new arrows and I'm pretty sure that some 140gn Grizzlies will be on the business end.

mikebiz, We used a Legends Cyclone longbow. 40#@30" 64". The arrow used was 500 grns.I wanted to check a lighter bow to see what we could get in penetration. The heavy weight bows will make any broadhead look good. The best penetrating broadhead out of a 40# bow will be even better out of a heavier weight bow. For maximum penetration the Grizzly past the test with flying colors. I used a Lansky Sharpener on all the broad heads. I may also add the Grizzly held a better edge after the testing.

Of course, a lot of Ed Ashby's arrow lethality studies involved Grizzly heads.  One of the few that didn't deform as well.

Thanks for the info, Michael.  My longbows are right around the 40# at my 25" draw.  My arrows will be a little lighter around 425 grains, but I think those Grizzlies will work really well for me.

I did a little searching and you can get the best price that I found at the Grizzly site mentioned above

Another note. If you look at the spread of broadhead weights by Grizzly the  variety should be compatible to a large variety of arrow combinations.
