Last minute hunt...
« on: August 29, 2013, 10:30:00 PM »
:help:

Well, as luck would have it, my hunt for moose next month got canceled.  I was supposed to go to Quebec the end of September.  It was a sweet deal, totaling about $2,000 plus gas and license.  Oh well.  Life happens.  So now I have time off and I am not sure if I can still salvage something.

My first thought was a DIY for elk in CO.  Problem is, I don't even know when the season is, and I don't think I will be able to make the 25 hour ride out there (Quebec would have been 12).  Plus, with so little time left, I don't think I could scout, prep, get all the camping stuff, etc.

Next, I thought to just stay put and get some action here at home.  Issue with that is, it's only open in a small part of the state (PA) and it's only antlerless (not that I care about horns, they would be chew toys for my dogs, but if I'm going...).

The outfitter was also trying to accommodate me with some other things.  One was a 1/2 price trip for elk to NM.  But that 1/2 price is double what the moose would cost and that is a 30 hour ride or a plane trip (extra $$$).

The outfitter also offered me to go on the same trip in 2014 for half price, and I am cool with that, but with all the stuff in the news lately (Syria), I might be in some forsaken hole over there this time next year, so it makes me a bit nervous to plan that far out.

I am open to ideas and suggestions.  In no way is it a big deal, but I don't want to let the time off go to waste.

Any input is much appreciated, even if it's an "I feel ya. same thing happened to me back in..."

Thanks all,

Be well,

Alex

It is short notice but I would have to go for a last minute OTC Colorado elk hunt! Several season to choose from too.

What about a DIY sika deer hunt in Maryland or Va? The sika maybe non-native but they are related to elk  :)

Awesome suggestions.  Thanks all.  I am still mauling it over.  I may just wait for archery deer season here in PA and save the money for a DIY elk trip to CO next year.  This will give me some time to prep, scout (via internet) and talk to folks that have done it.  Whatever it is, I'm sure I'll be on the forum asking for advice.  Thanks again!

Maybe a fall bear hunt / fishing trip?

Early season whitetail? Kentucky or Missouri possibly? Maybe the Dakotas, though I'm not sure about tag availibilty for them.

You can never go wrong with a Col elk hunt. Fly out, rent car/camping gear and spend a nice vacation in the high country with the possibilty of taking an elk. You may even be able to find someone to catch a ride with or even share camp.

Montana might have left over non resident deer and elk tags. The season starts in 8 days!

Dusty at Bear Creek Outfitters has a few black bear openings.  He is in Armstrong Ontario, and runs a first rate outfit.  Good luck.
