Odd noise when string released.

I have been noticing a noise when I release the string at times. It is like "twank". Not always and it seems to happen more with certain arrows. I want my set up to be as quiet as possible and with opening day just around the corner I would like to get this figured out soon.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I do have a bow quiver on my bow and I have tried padding it for a tighter fit.

Could it be that I'm torqueing the string sometimes?

Start simple, recheck brace height, nock point, then arrow tune.

Take quiver off and see if its it. Check limb bolt inserts in riser if takedown.

Sounds like arrows may be hitting of of shelf or by strikeplate! Shawn

If it only happens sometimes, you might check your form.  Maybe you are twisting the string with your string hand?  My bow gets louder with my form is off.

As was mentioned, torqueing the bow or bowstring can cause the arrow to impact the side plate.  Too stiff arrows cause the same thing.  If your arrows are almost too stiff, it could cause it to happen intermittently.  Check your limb bolts and the limb mounting studs; maybe put a tiny dab of Vaseline or something on the mounting studs.

check nocks, some maybe to tight.

Had the same problem this year. One nock was loose and the string jumped before contact..

Raise nock point an 8th.

I would investigate in this order:

1. Form
2. Brace height/nock point
3. Bow quiver
4.....and this happened to me...check for any laminations coming loose....

All the above + 1...do you have a bow tip protector on it? A loose bow tip protector will make an awful racket. Granted it will probably be more regular (most every shot) than what you're talking about, but worth checking if none of the above works.

r-man, I don't think the nocks are too tight. If anything they are too loose.

old arrow, do you mean the arrow nock groove was too big for the string? That could be the problem.

katman, I tuned this batch of arrows using O.L. Adcock's method. I tuned with the quiver on and two arrows in the three arrow quiver, like it would be while taking a shot on a hunt. I think taking off the quiver now would make the arrows fly awful. Also, it's a one pc longbow, no bolts.

Terry, I recently lowered the nock an 8th. I will try raising it back an 8th. I will check the brace ht. also.

I have one arrow that out shoots all the others and is dead quiet. I will check the spine on all the others and see if there are repeat offenders and how the spine compares to the good arrow.

I have POC shafts coming and I'm hoping to duplicate that one arrow into a batch that is much more closely matched.

Then I will check my form.

If it only happens with some arrows maybe some of the nocks are tighter fit on the string than the others.

One additional thing to check...If you have wrapped silencers (Beaver Balls or such) make sure they are tight to the string.  I had a strange noise once on a MOAB and it turned out to be the beaver balls were installed incorrectly and were a bit loose against the string.  Had a fit until it was discovered.

I had a plan but then tried something else first.

I use a three arrow bow quiver that I modified by attaching an aluminum rod to hold the two pieces, (upper limb piece and lower limb piece), together.

I put on a newer glove then went out to shoot.

I first tried shooting all my arrows, about a dozen, with the quiver on but no arrows in it. Result, NO noise! I then shot them with the quiver off. It had definite louder sound but not the "twank" sound.

I then shot them the way I have been shooting, with two in the quiver in spots 1 and 3. The noise was back with most of the arrows.

Long story shorter...

I found out that there is no noise with two in the quiver in spots 1 and 3 IF the first arrow shot is my best arrow. If the second arrow shot is from spot #1 there is no noise....

I still think some of it is form, like not quite getting to full draw or not extending through the shot, (which isn't that like shooting a stiffer arrow?). But it's nice to know when it's me and not the equipment.
