Cresting w/ a lathe
«

Hi has anyone set up a mini lathe like a Sherline lathe as a cresting machine? I inherited one and don't have much experience w/ using it to know the proper attachments needed to get the job done safely and efficiently. Thanks in advance.

i use a 3/8" drill strapped to a 2x4. its ghetto but it works. not rocket science, just got to spin a shaft. btw i use a hose clamp on the trigger to set the speed, and i plug it in to turn it on, and unplug it to turn it off. I do my cresting before i cut the extra length off my shafts, so that it doesn't matter if the chock digs into the wood.

I have a similar setup as Echatham. I use a screw bit on the drill and use surgical tubing to attach the shaft to the drill. That way the shaft doesn't have to be perfectly level...I cradle the spinning shaft in one hand and crest with the other.
If you search my posts, I'm pretty sure I have a picture of it somewhere...and cresting results.

I modified a 8x32 screw, basically ground it down to where the collet would go over it. I put a insert in that end and screwed it into the dremmel tool I have. I put a 2x4 on the other end standing up and drilled a hole to where the shaft barley fit,and this supports it on that end.

You don't need attachments if the arrow shaft will go through the headstock - just grip it with the headstock, spin, and paint. I use a metal lathe for cresting as well.
