sight on a longbow
« on: September 30, 2013, 02:53:00 PM »
I have a dryad 3 piece ILF longbow and was thinking of putting a simple 1 pin sight on it. I know this breaks every trade rule ...buuut...how many of you have done it or are doing the same thing now. strictly for 20-25yd hunting
And in the end when i can no longer draw the bow or watch the arrow embark on its flight;when i posses only the spirit of the hunter, i will hunt.... if only in my dreams... because the hunt is born amidst my soul, and i... i am the hunter

It doesn't break any rules what-so-ever. Sights have been on bows long before the compound ever thought about existing. I don't like sights for me personally but if you want to shoot traditional and find you don't shoot very accurately instinctive, gap shooting, or point of aim, then go for it. My bet is that some sort of sight has been on a few bows just about since bows were invented.

I saw one fellow with a used recurve that he bought with a sight on it. He set the sights so he could shoot with his bow slightly canted. It had four pins, he removed the middle two. The top pin was set for 12 yards and the bottom pin was set for thirty yards. He said that anything that he would ever shoot at would either be at the top pin to above the bottom pin and he shot instinctive, using the pins as secondary referrences. It must have worked for him, he seemed to be a very good shot.

Only folks you need to worry about are the trad police!  They'll come get you.    :biglaugh:    Hey, it's your bow, why worry what anybody else thinks about it?

It's STILL a longbow. I use a mechanical release and don't do Trad Shoots, so use whatever helps you NOT wound animals. No shame in THAT!
Hmmmmm. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm
not sure that what you heard is what I actually meant!

I used to have an old Martin Recurve that had a single pin that marked 20 yards. I would aim at the bottom of the belly if it were closer, and the top of the back if it were further. I took more deer with that setup than with all other bows combined. Granted, I was in an area where I could legally hunt two states and take two deer a day in each. Still, it was a nice setup and I never knew how good I had it, until instinct hunting black tail out here with a long bow. That setup is a suggestion I made to a friend of mine that is trying to convert from wheels.

Whatever gets it done man! If a sight is your thing so be it. I have one bow I put a stabilizer on (an all wood hunting bow) and I get alot of stink for it , but I can hit consistently at 30-35 yards with that setup on 3d.

Anyway, I think if you like it you should do it.

Might wanna think about gap shooting, it's like having a sight, and once you get used to it, it's like everyone's bow has a sight. You can pick up your buddies bow and shoot it like you own it ... .just something to think about.

SRF sight would probably work pretty well.

Thanks guys. Im good to go at 25yd and under instinctive shooting. providing i keep up my range time, its beyond that to the occasional 30 yd buck you cant let walk zone im talking about. Also i frequent nj hunter forums because unfortunately I'm from nj. I just need to give credit where its due. The caliber of people on this site never ceases to amaze me, not a derogatory reply in the bunch...thanks. I would have been made fun of by the first 6 responses and cursed at by the second 6...keep up the quality site we have here its truly one of a kind. Thankyou to all the mods
And in the end when i can no longer draw the bow or watch the arrow embark on its flight;when i posses only the spirit of the hunter, i will hunt.... if only in my dreams... because the hunt is born amidst my soul, and i... i am the hunter
