stropping compound for sharpening
« on: October 02, 2013, 12:54:00 PM »
Folks,

Would you kindly suggest your favorite brand and source for stropping compound for sharpening?  I will be using this for both broad heads and my wood chisels and planes.

Thanks in advance.

I've used red jewelers rouge stick compound for years, but there are others that are probably better.  Tuffhead has a powder compound that they sell for broadheads that works very well.

According to Ron at KME, all you need is regular corrugated cardboard and draw backwards over the ridges.

I started trying it and MAN...does it set up a fine edge once it's sharpened properly!

Vintage Archery sells what you are looking for.  I actually just bought their leather stop that is glued to a wood board and stropping compound after I tried a feiends at deer camp last month.  It took my KME sharp broadheads to a whole new level.

Just looking at getting into traditional archery, so I guess my first post might as well be on something I do know a bit about.

For my knives I purchased a Stropman strop years ago and use his compounds as they come in 1 oz bars and I'll never go through a whole pound. I have no idea which compound might be best for a broadhead, but he'd be more than willing to talk to you about it.

stropman.com is the site, he is a one man shop and gives personal attention.

I was  golf course mechanic for 20yrs, the term is lapping compound, its so cheap if you go to a golf course and ask to talk to the mechanic he may just hand you what you need, we buy 25-50lbs at a time for near 1$ a pound, 120grt, 1180, and 220grit, we use it to backlap the cutting reels. look at R&R products ( google it)
