fast flight string or not ?
« on: October 05, 2013, 10:19:00 PM »
I have a Bear Super Grizzley W/fascore.  I presently use a dacron string on it.  Can I safely switch to a fast flight string without hurting the bow ?   Would apreciate any help somebody can give me.

That sounds like an older Bear Super Grizzly,if it is I would only use B50 or B55.I know some guys will make padded loop FF type strings and use them on older bows without a problem. But that would be up to you,it may or may not harm your bow? I usally like an endless loop B50 for my two older vintage recurves,a Ben Pearson and a Browning.

Chuck...no doubt its a personal choice and there are those who will do exactly as JRY309 points out,in making a padded loop string. I have converted several old Bears to accept fast flite by sanding down the tip overlays and replacing them with phenolic overlays. Even then I will usually make a padded loop string as a precaution. The speed increase is significant and in some cases the bow actually feels better in the hand to shoot with the fast flite string. I've converted a few Wings and Ben Pearson's over the years as well and some of those shot like an entirely different bow after the conversion.

I think if I were you I'd probably beef up the tip overlays on that bow if I was going to use fast flite on it

I have had a ff type string on a 1959 grizzly for years. Frankly I see no difference to the bow whatsoever-just enjoying the increased performance. I do not know if the myth holds or not-don't think anybody knows. Ask yourself how bummed would you be if the string ruined the bow and go from there.

As usual Bjorn has the best advice.  An alternative to FF would be to try the newer B55 poly in an endless loop.  Chad from LBR Champion Custom Bowstrings offers these.  My experience is the bow will want the same spine with the B55 as with D97 flemish, just much quieter.  Speed difference is minimal, if any.

Thanks,  I will go with fast flight. Now to find a good place to purchase a couple. I will also put one on my Fred Bear Takedown.

I just ordered a string from Lefties R Us (a sponsor here). Allen builds an awesome string and the customer service is top notch!

Pierre from SBD strings told me that he will use the  FF strings on vintage bears but only with "heavy arrows" in the range of 600 grains or more.  May want to consider that as well

I myself wouldnt do it.. I build strings and u r sacrificing silence for a few ft per second...the dacron string is much quieter..and if u hunt u know what thats worth..besides the older bows were not designed for ff.. the bow will take more shock because ff strings dont give..not worth it..
