Had to pass

Ten yards, right at last 1/2 hour of daylight Friday evening, saturday oHIo had a state wide early muzzleloader for doe only. It has been soooo hot here in oHIo. Can't believe this is October.
Anyhow, think I made the right decision. We have a lot of season left

The nice thing about letting them walk is you still got the tag if something bigger comes by.
Everyone has their own standards and what's a shooter and whats not...good on ya for sticking to your standards.

That would be hard to pass up for me , only because of the amount of time I get to hunt .

I have let one like him walk several times this season. If i still need meat at the end of the season and he shows, all bets are off! But he is safe from me for now.
Good luck filling your tag!

I agree with your decision. Let him grow some before trying again. I let a couple of small bucks walk just yesterday, waiting on a mature deer. Even though no shot is made, it is still a thrill to be able to get that close to a deer without being busted. I hope you get a big one next time.

Thanks guys. I am strictly a meat hunter...not a headhunter, a big headed buck is bonus. It was 40 minutes of pure pleasure watching him.

He will be bigger next year! We can only shoot 1 buck here and I usually hold out for the older bucks just because. I like watching deer as much as I like shooting them. But I would have let him walk too. It's still hot and there is plenty of action to come. Post some pics of the one you do shoot too. Thanks for sharing.

I am fully in favor of your choice to let him go.
That said, I was picking a spot within a second of seeing the photo! I'm not sure I could have passed!
If I may ask, Public or private land?
Great job and thanks for sharing the picture!

Good choice, if it doesn't trip your trigger save it until it does.

Your more of a man than I! LOL.
That photo looks like he was a hoot to watch. Aside from no venison in the freezer, letting em pass has always been exponentially more beneficial for learning about deer habits than when you want to drop the string on one.
Cool photo!
Good luck this year.

Buckeye_Hunter, it is private. My brother and I, and wives bought some property.
"Picking a spot" that is what I did the whole time. I studied his anatomy, At one point he turned his head to his right and was either licking his "parts" or his inner right back leg. That exposed the whole boiler room, big time, head was buried, no eyes to see me draw, it would/should have been a chip shot. It was so hot though, I hate being rushed. Would rather it be cooler

When I pull my chip from my camera next time I'll post the photos from the camera. That will be a neat perspective/comparison.

Same thing happened to me this evening. Deer looked very much like the one in your photo. I was on the ground at the edge of a soybean field and he came in 7 yards broadside.
Everything I was hoping for. Not sure I could have got the shot off, but would have pulled the string on a doe.

I passed on a fat 6 pointer yesterday morning. He gave me the perfect shot opportunity, but I really need to take more does from the property I am hunting. Since I already have one in the freezer, I just closed my eyes and let him stroll on by
. Nice to watch though!
