Finally, an encouraging experience!
« on: October 17, 2013, 06:55:00 AM »
I decided yesterday to try hunting on a food plot that I found while dove hunting last month.

The spot that I planned on making a blind in, had already been cleared for me when I got there, so I gave it a try.

Once the sun got low enough, I flipped the brim of my boonie hat up to open my peripheral vision on my right side. Unbeknownst to me, a doe had snuck in from behind and caught my movement through a clear spot in the brush I was sitting in.

As it turned out, she, the yearling doe & fawn that were with her didn't completely bug out. They just watched me for awhile & eventually went out to the food plot anyway. They made sure to keep their distance from the strange moving fat bush (me) though. Lol.

As I tried to "will" them into range, I noticed more coming from the same area. For the next hour or so, I got to watch about 20 deer "playing" & chasing each other around in front of me (and just out of range).

It seems I've found a decent hunting spot, with just a few tweaks in blind location needed for a real possibility at a shot. (Hopefully I haven't jinxed it with this post!   :saywhat: )

I know this is probably not that big of a deal to most of you guys, but this was the first time I've ever seen anything like that in real life, and usually my deer sightings are hit & miss. Possibilities for shots are fewer still.

I've been hunting (with all kinds of weapons) for about 9 years now with no filled tags yet, so this is pretty exciting to me!

So pray for me & my K-Mag that we draw first blood next week, as it will be my last chance before the muzzleloading crowd gets their chance.

Thanks again for listening to me.    :campfire:

-Tony

Prayers go up, blessings come down. That is a cool experience Tony. I wish I had the oppotunity to see this in the wild.

It sounds like you and I are having the same sort of hunting experience. Except for the one you just told us about.

I seldom see deer anymore so to have twenty feeding in front of me while hunting would be something to be exited about.

I've even thought about telling a hunting story starting with "Hey I have a great hunting story" then at the end say "None of this was true but it is a great story!"

Always exciting to be close to deer. Be patient, watch your wind, and you'll connect. Nothing better on the table than a young doe.

Awesome Tony! I saw 12 together last January when removing stands :-). Twenty is a pretty good number. Put in the time and you will connect. Good luck

I don't know what is cooler - that you saw all those deer or "found" a food plot???  They don't just spring up around here - and if they did there would be someone else watching it with a bow in hand.

Go get a deer and post pics!!

It's public land & the wildlife department here in OK does all the work. Also one of the perks of having off days in the middle of the week is that the other guys get their chances on the weekend & I get to come in when they least expect it. Lol. Thanks for the prayers & well wishes! I'll do my best to make y'all proud! Also, I felt like I got my head in the game much quicker than usual. Kept telling myself, "get ready, but don't rush it! Don't forget to pick a spot when the time comes!" Trying to teach myself to save the excitement for AFTER the job is done.

You guys are awesome!

Wow - that is really nice.  Not sure if they do such a thing here in Michigan because it has been so long since I have hunted public land outside the west end of the UP so maybe they do down here.  With your opportunity I think I would do a little research on the program and find as many of those state made food plots and then overlay them with topo maps looking for pinch points and heavy bedding or swamp cover near by.  Scout to verify deer are there and set up between the food and the bed.  Only a matter of time after that.

Best of luck!!
