Wood Arrow Experts
« on: October 18, 2013, 10:38:00 PM »
Okay folks I'd like some advice as I'm venturing into unchartered waters.  Wanting to try some wood arrows.  Specs are as follow: I'm shooting a Mojostick (not quite cut to center might be an 1/8" before center but close to center) that is 55# @ 28" and I draw right at or slightly over 28" (I like a 29.5" arrow if that means anything to you).  I would be shooting 125-135 grain points (eskimos, deltas, and woodsmans).  It does have a fast flight string on it currently.  After reviewing numerous threads and spine charts on here I'm guessing I am pretty close to a 70-75# or 75-80# spine at my draw and length.  Thoughts on if I am in the ball park?  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thx, Mike..

I'm no expert but just started wood arrows too.  I suggest when in doubt going heavier then you expect.  Easy to find heavy points and broadheads, but hard to make arrows stiffer.

Talk to snag. He makes wilderness custom arrows. He just set me up with a test kit on some arrows to get me close. I am also venturing into wood as well. Even though they were just test arrows you can tell he is good at what he does. I didn't know clear coated shafts with white feathers could look so good. Can't wait till tomorrow to get out and try them out. Good luck.

The longbows that I have shot that are not cut to center, I have found that you need to be closer to your draw weight.  Since your are probably holding at around 56-57# I would think that 60-65# would work better.  I also think that with this set up,  arrows with a 10" back taper would also have some advantages.

I shoot heavier heads, usually 160s, with 30 inch arrows at a 29 1/2 inch draw and I would be shooting 65-70s out of your set up.

I see Steve responded.  You can't go wrong with Surewoods.  I have bought them direct, from Dave Doran and from Snag and all have been great shafts.

I shoot a Mohawk longbow at 53# @ 28" and I draw right at 28". I cut my arrows 29" to back of point and I shoot 55-60 well with broadheads between 145 & 160. My bow is not cut to center and has fast flight string on it. I see a lot of suggestions that seem on the heavy side to me. I would try 55-60 or 60-65. Personal form and release can affect it quite a bit.

60-65 should work.

Thank you for the info guys, looks like I was 10# heavy on my estimate!  Always could do test shafts if need be..
