Well, with daylight savings time and all, I thought I'd venture to the woods out behind my little 5 acre farm. Got out just as the sun was starting to come up, found my little spot on the ridge over looking a creek bottom. At about 7:30 I see movement, a nice, probably 2 1/2 year old 8 pointer. He crosses the creek at about 50 yrds and starts making his way towards me. I'm up above him and he is cautious but not overly, meanders through some heavy brush and starts to vear away, I give him a little grunt, he does'nt hear it. I grunt again, his head pops up and looks around, looking straight at me, but shows no sign of alarm. He continues on at about 40 yds and goes behind some old rolled up fence wire. The fence wire is at about 20 yds, he shows up at about 25 yds just on the other side of the fence wire, now he is above me, I tried to position for a shot with as little movement as possible. There he stood 25 yds away, broadside and about 10 feet in elevation above me, I had an area of about 1 square foot to shoot through, I knew I would have to manuever a little bit more because of the angle. Well he jumped fence and wandered off. No shot, I guess my conscience said better not to take the shot, than make a bad one, hmmmm! A half hour later,I saw 5 does being bird dogged by a young 6 pointer, none were receptive at all, so he wandered off but did not provide any shot opportunity. I love this time of year, and getting a shot or not, I just enjoy being out there. Still plenty of season and I'm quite sure, opportunities. By the way, I did want to know if I could have made that shot, so I took out my blunt and took it, guess what? Yep, I made it, but we all know the circumstance were different, but if there is ever a next time, well I will deal with it then! Again, a Wonderful morning in the woods, all from ground level!
