Big Wide File ?
« on: November 05, 2013, 12:49:00 PM »
Do you guys know of anyone who makes a BIG WIDE mill file, like wide enough for a BIG Snuffer?

I am looking for a single file, not a Snuffer Tamer twin file setup.

Thanks

might check at Fastenall if you have one near you. Grainger would be my first choice.

I got a real big one for the same reason (for snuffers)  It is the biggest Nicholson I could find and works great.   I found it online after Googling all over the internet,  but can't for the life of me remember where I ordered it from.  I know it was not a common retail store, I think it was some type of hardware supply outfit from out of state.  If you search around enough you should stumble on a supplier online.  Mine is a big boy,  about 16 inches long and about 1.5 to 1.75 wide.

I have a 12" Nicholson. It will handle a 1.25 VPA.

16" Nicholson IMO is the handiest broadhead sharpening tool available for just about all heads.

Find a machine shop tool dealer in your area.  You can get much better files than the Nicholson and still American made.

Nicholson makes a 16" that I used to change the blade angle on my Wensel Woodsmans.

16" Nicholson Mill Bastard file for all my large snuffers. Fastenal or Grainger can fix you right up. Make sure before use that you degrease it with acetone or alcohol, then chalk it up with any old stick chalk to keep it from loading up with filings. I mount my file in a vise and drag my snuffers backwards on the file. Finish on a wooden block with thick leather glued on top. Never had anything as sharp !!! When you are finished use a small toothbrush style fine wire brush or file card brush to brush your file good and clean, making sure to brush out all the chalk and filings. Spray the file down with a lite coat of WD-40 so it will not rust. When you need the file again reverse the process by cleaning with acetone or alcohol, etc, etc.... Rust and clogged teeth are the death of a good file. Take good care of your file and it will last longer than you can imagine and will sharpen things up faster as well. JMHO and lessons learned as a aerospace machinist. Hope this helps.......  :coffee:

I use a 12 inch long, 1 1/8 inch wide Kobalt file (Lowes's house brand) for woodsmans and grizzlys. Its decent quality and available over the counter just a few mile away from me. Im sure the 16" Nicholson is the better option tho
