Almost closed the deal!
« on: November 06, 2013, 09:09:00 PM »
After a morning hunt and failing to see any deer from my stand, I got down and decided to do a little scouting. As I eased through the river bottom, I noticed two deer chasing and paralleling my position.  The lead doe, followed by a spike buck, turned and began coming my way. At this point, I had my tree stand, climbing sticks and pack on my back so I knelt down and nocked an arrow. The doe came running up and threw on the brakes somewhere between 5-10 yards. I was already at full draw when she stopped and stared at me. The angle was poor as she only offered me a straight on shot. Tempted at the chip-shot distance, I chose to pass on the shot. Knowing my luck, nothing good would come from taking that shot. I guess my out-of-state tags will have to remain unpunched a little bit longer.

Counting coupe is sometimes very satisfying and the best choice for the situation.

Pick your shot, then and only then, pick your spot.

You made the best decision for the situation.

Thanks for sharing!!

Nice Dennis....you're definitely in the state to be patient. As far as counting coup, it sure beats a the possibility of a long drawn out trailing adventure.  I hate long blood trails!

Keep after them!>...Tim

I love long blood trails.......as long as there is a dead critter at the end. I get a real feeling of accomplishment on the long hard trails when the critter is found. That being said, I too think you made the right choice!
