range problem/ glue on points and self nocks
« on: November 11, 2013, 12:21:00 PM »
buddy and I went to the local range here and were told by several "seasoned" members that glue on field points were not allowed. ok, so I went to truck and got the target bamboo arras with glued in duplex nails filed to a point. they then told us we couldn't use them either cause, get this,  reinforced self nocks are not safe. tried calling the guy in charge of the archery, but as usual, he never pick up. sent an email Friday, but still no word. next range/club meeting isn't until the 30th. what you guys think? ever had someone do this to you? they had the range officer tell us to leave. it's a gun/archery range so he has final say at the time. the written policies are vague, just saying no broadheads.

Wheelie prejudices and an elitiest attitude. Nothing more than that.

I have had lots of plastic nocks break but never had a self nock or reinforced self nock break.
Why are glue on field points not allowed? I guess they can come off in a 3D target.
It is too bad ignorance seems to win out.

I do not have an indoor range at Lost Nation Archery so whenever I've helped organize a league I am at the mercy of other shops.  I had one that had the traditional group shoot video because he didn't want points coming off in his target bales.  Last year he shot traditional himself and he gave in to letting us use the bales and the range.  It went well.

It is true that glue on points are notorious for coming off, although they are not nearly as bad as thier reputation.  It you are a member at the range you have a right to have your issue addressed.  Members pay the dues and should get facilities they can use.

Glue on points do not come off even with cheap hot melt, when you prepare them right. Use an M8 Thread cutter and use 2 turns inside. That will give a positive mechanical connection between point and glue. It is always the glue-metal connection which fails. Usually in cold weather.
Never happened to me after threading...

And clean the tips of *all* grease/oil before gluing.

When you think about it, what really is the difference between a glued-on field point and a glued-in insert?  I'll bet I've had more glued-in inserts come off in targets than glued-on field points.  Why don't you go back to the range and tell all those folks they can't shoot with their glued-in inserts!
