Anyone Using AMSTEEL Rope Puff Balls for Silencers??
« on: November 21, 2013, 12:34:00 AM »
Hey all,

Since reading about and learning of this stuff called AMSTEEL rope and how it makes great string silencers, I have been using it.  I think it works really well, much better than my home made yarn puffs.

To those that don't know or haven't heard of it, it is a very strong rope made for special applications like yachting, boating, rigging and so forth.  It is waterproof, extremely strong, extremely lightweight and will almost never wear out.  Since trying it I have found that it does work very well for this purpose.

I am wondering how it compares to the rubber cat whiskers.  I haven't tried the AMSTEEL on my longbow yet, it has muskrat fur on it now, but I am wanting to give it a try.

Does anyone else use this stuff and if so, how has it been working for you?  Do you think it outperforms the rubber cat whiskers?

What's your thoughts on it.

If anyone would like to try some, I have a length of 7/16 rope about 4 feet long that you can have and distribute to any that wants to try it.  Or if you just want to try it, let me know and I'll send you a piece to try.

Opinions?

Thanks all,

Nalajr

Tried them for a while, not as effective for me than hush puppies. They also got tangled up and ratty looking in a short time, but I spend a lot of time in the woods. Great idea fora target bow where weight is a concern.

So how do you use it (any pics)
Do you just put it between the string strands like other silencer material and let it fray/fluff out over time?

Burnsie,

Yeah pretty much.  I have used it both ways, between the strings and slipping the "rope" section over the ends of the string and then tying it into place and combing the fibers free of each other.

The only problem I have seen with it is that the fibers are so tiny and strong that they do tend to tangle on each other.  It works great, but after 1000 shots it looks like a birds nest made from hair.

Here are some pics of the 1/4 inch rope.  You can see in this that I passed the string through the center of the rope and tied it onto the string.

You can see how it starts to separate into smaller strings that make up the rope.  These smaller strings are made up of MANY small almost fiber like threads that are very strong.  These are the "threads" I was describing earlier when I talked about combing them apart.

They get tangled after a while though.  I am going to put some on my longbow and instead of combing apart the individual fibers as I have always done, I am going to get it separated into the larger "strings" like you see in the last pics and then place a drop of Super Glue at the end of each of these smaller strings so they will stay together.  I want to see how that will work.  Hopefully it will work the same.

This is the 1/4 inch rope in GREEN.  It is GREEN all the way through.  I also have a 4 foot section of 7/16 inch rope that I used last year and it is light BLUE in color.  I don't have any pics of that.

If you want the light blue piece, you can have it, just PM me.  If you'd like a piece of the 1/4 inch green to try, let me know and I'll send you a couple sections to try with some instructions.

What'cha think?

Last pic isn't so good, but you can kinda tell of how many and how tiny those fibers are that make up each strand.
