Hex Heads or Steel Blunts?????
« on: September 11, 2007, 05:16:00 PM »
Planning a Huntin' Trip!!!!!

I'm heading up to My Brother adkmountainken's for his "Adirondack Attack" next month and I have a dilema.....

We'll be hunting Deer, Bear, Turkeys, and my "ultimate goal" the elusive Black Squirrel!!!!!

I addition to hunting there will be LOTS OF SHOOTIN' FUN!!!!! Stumpin' 3-D targets "shirt-tails" (   ) Some of the Gang are bringing 3-D targets for us to shoot at and here raises my dilema.....

I plan on bringing my back quiver with a dozen cedar arrows, 6 tipped with old green Bear Razorheads, and 6 tipped with 125gr. steel blunts for stumping,3-D,targets,and those Black Squirrels. I've thought about pulling the steel blunts and replaceing them with some Ace Hex-Heads that I have gotten, but I don't want to "tear apart" the 3-D targets the Gang are gracious enough to bring up. I have used the steel blunts for MANY years for stumping and small game. They aint perfect.....but they're pretty darn good!!!!! I have never used the Hex-Heads,but I have seen with my own eyes how DEVASTATING they are on game!!!!! Folks have mentioned that they work good for stumping, but they look like they would REALLY "rip-up" a 3-D target!!!!!

Help me out Gang!!!!! What do ya think?????
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

There is a fine line between Hunting, & Sitting there looking Stupid...

May The Great Spirit Guide Your Arrows..... Happy Hunting!!!

Hex heads cut nice hexagons in bag targets.
Hex heads cut nice hexagons in cedar boards.
Hex heads cut nice hexagons in sheetrock.
Hex heads cut nice hexagons in trees.
Hex heads cut nice hexagons in 3D targets.

If they were my targets, and you don't have any field points, I'd rather you shot 'em with broadheads.

Uh, what JimmyD said, but I'll add
Hex heads cut nice hexagons in 3/4" Birch Plywood
They do work great for stumping and really do a number on small game.
Even regular blunts do a number on 3D targets.

Hey, We have lots of black squirels in an around Council Bluffs, IA. They are the predominate type in our neck of the woods. Use field points on the targets just to keep friends.

Chuck,
You mean to tell me after all the posts about "WINGNUTTERS!!!" I've seen from you, that none of your arrows are gonna be wearing them up at Ken's next month...sad...   ;)   :bigsmyl:    ;)

I dont like hex heads for stumping, they tend to hit something like hard ground and snap the shaft just behind the point, I would use them on squirrels though

Chris,

UNFORTUNATELY.....I don't have any more 5/16th wingnuts left.....All I have is 1/4" wingnuts that I put on my 2016's with an 8-32 flat head machine screw.

Gonna try somethin' new!!!!! I'm figure I might as well Use'em or Loose'em!!!!!    :archer:

Ian:
I've had exactly the oppsite results with the Hexblunt. When you think about it with the end being cupped the energy goes straight up the shaft, with a field point the first contact is the point which causes a anvil/fulcrum effect and causes what you described. The lack of shafts breaking in hard dirt is what sold me on them.

I would bring three blunts for the 3 D, and three hex heads for your nemesis. Then you will be six arrows ahead of the game for the bunny hunt. You guys are gonna have a blast....good luck to you and the rest of the camp.

I'm with aromakr...

Hex heads don't seem to skip as much as steel blunts -- although hitting the ground more than 15 steps away can send anything but a judo point "somewhere."  But judos are cumbersome...  (Hmm, maybe mechanical judos.  Yeah, that's the ticket!)

I would bring field points for the 3d shooting out of r4espect for the owners of the target.A blunt hitting foam would create a bigger and more permanent hole in the foam than what a field point would make which usually heals.I hear hex heads are better than blunts for anything else.

I have shot the hex heads at my 3D target once just to see and by all means bring field points. On game as said above, do great work on small game.
