great experience in the woods
« on: December 04, 2013, 06:48:00 PM »
Although this happened during Michigans gun season I thought it was worth mentioning.  The Monday after the opener here the local TV station out of Marquette in the UP has an outdoor show and it featured Ron LaClairs Shew Haven Lodge in their half hour show on the traditions of Michigans deer hunting camps.  I really enjoyed the piece and listening to Ron and the group of guys he had in camp at the time.  It really gave you an idea of the great commerodery that goes with hunting camps.  It was the next morning that I had my "great experience", walking into my stand the next morning the wolves were howling all around, I have to admit it was a little unnerving, but it was great to hear.  Around 8:30 in the morning I had my closest and only experience with a wolf in the wild, it came troting over a ridge and after I shooed it away, and later paced it off in the snow, 26 steps!!!! AWSOME EXPERIENCE!!!!! I know the reverence that Ron has for the wolf, and I felt like after watching the show about Rons camp, I was given the opportunity to have this great experience. I am truely grateful for this.

Neat to see......but why did you shoo it away. I mean I know he was not good to have near you while hunting but to see one.....I would want that to last as long as possible. Still pretty cool!

I wasn't sure how many friends he was bringing with him   :) .  Looking back I wish I would have let him walk on by, but its still a memory I'll always have and it makes a great hunting camp story.

Very cool story.
Wolves are amazing to see and definitely make the hairs stand up on the back of you neck when they are close. I have seen 6 wolves in my life 3 under 30 yards while hunting in Canada. Very cool animals but make me a little on edge when close.

Beautiful colors too black head and body and tail with gray belly and legs, with kind of silver tips, looked like it almost had a blueish hue or tint when the sun hit it just right.

I thought about buying a tag before I went north this year, this was the first year Michigan has had a wolf hunt.  Hind sight 20/20 as usual, this was the first time in 15 years of hunting the north woods I got to see one up close and personal, only other one was one in the head lights driving out hunting one morning.  Wish I was holding a camera when he came over the ridge...but I'd have felt pretty foolish if it had been a big ole buck   :biglaugh: .  I'm just glad I got to have the experience and hope to see more in the future.  I'm always in awe of the good lords beauty.
