Need a little help......
« on: January 21, 2007, 07:50:00 AM »
You guys might remember that I had a problem with the crazy glue/Tru-oil finish over my snakeskins cracking. You also might remember that when I shot at this deer.....

This happened when I shot at him and I hit my lower limb on my hand climber......

The skins needed to come off anyway(re-skin),so this just made it a little easier    :knothead:

But when I went to strip the rest off I remembered that I'd had problems with the skin sticking to the limbs toward the tips on both ends. After getting fustrated glueing them down 2 times I finally just threw some crazy glue under the skins and that sure kept them down! I had no plans/or reason originally to think I'd have to remove them,so it seemed like a good idea at the time . Now I'm left with this....   :banghead:

Any suggestions about how to deal with this crazy glue???

Is there a product that might soften it enough to wipe, scrape off without ruining my bow?

I know if all else failes I might be able to sand it smooth, but not sure I want to go that route for fear of messing up the tiller or something.

HELP PLEASE

Curt,
I would guess that anything you use will affect the finish on the limbs( a testament to Jack's limbs though, reverse string like that!); I would use a mild solvent, or go to Walmart in the nail polish section.
Buy the bottle of 100% acetone and apply with a sponge, let it sit for a bit then use a shotchbrite pad( the real rough ones) and scrub the CA glue off it.
it may work for you.
worse comes to worse you may have to sand it off and do a re-finish.
If you do I would recommend Thunderbird 2 part epoxy. You can brush it on and it is bomb-proof! My bowyer uses it and my bows have gone thru some stuff that should scratch them; not a mark on them at all! real good stuff.
if you have to take the finish off, sand it off with decreasing grits of sandpaper; finish it off with 0000 steel wool.
Who knows maybe you can sand of the CA glue and only 1 coat of finish. If that happens just a thin coat of poly may fix it up for ya too.
Good luck, let me know how it turns out.

sanding it off will not mess up the tiller, you would have to go into the glass to do that. most retillers are done by taking material from the sides of the limbs with a belt sander. You will be okay sanding it.

Acetone will remove the dried glue on that limb!

You should not have to sand it.

Well, That was quick!!  Thanks Guys...

BD, That's what I meant about sanding, getting into the glass too much.

I'll sure try acetone, little at a time,to keep it off the parts that don't need it....I have some downstairs. If not,I'll try the product that LB1415 suggested.

Thanks all....

Good stuff Curt, try the acetone and scotchbrite 1st, then let it dry and buff with 0000 steel wool. after that a little paste wax will go a long way to protecting limbs from the elements.
If you have to sand, best let Cade do it for ya...        he prolly wouln't go into the glass on ya! ...yet! LOL
