Minus33 weight recommendation
« on: December 21, 2013, 02:38:00 PM »
I plan to get some to replace some synthetics.  I have read up on size info for the 33 and some weights in other products. So far, I am not quite sure on the minus33 weights. There are no dealer around here to see the stuff.

I want to use it mostly for temps 40 down to mid 20's tree stand hunting.  I do most of my hunting where I have to pack in more stuff farther and set longer when temps are in this range.  I want to keep bulk of clothing down. My biggest issue keeping warm is upper body sweating getting in and setting up so I want to change to the wool to help with that. I want something warm enough for moving in minimum layers or just the base layer top. But, I don't want something so light it doesn't wick  well away from my skin, or offer much warmth when setting.

I also wouldn't mid if I could use the top only in a pop up blind for spring turkey and early fall hunting. I am going to get all black stuff for this reason.

I am looking at the light, midweight and expedition weight. My best guess right now is maybe light for bottoms and mid for tops.  Maybe expedition weight at some point for real cold weather or for use as a jacket in the pop up blind.   I just have no idea on how heavy these are.  I don't want to get light weight if it is a real thin layer for real active use, and I don't want to get something I will overheat in moving around in typical rut weather.

I have been using the mids top and I like it a lot in my layering.  I have an expedition top waiting for Xmas, but I think that will be too heavy for wearing and walking much.  We shall see on that one.

I am happy with the mid weight for the temps I have hunted so far this year and have a feeling that this may be the best choice.

I don't yet have any minus 33 bottoms.  My legs do not require a lot and I have a lot of older Duofolds so those will be the last purchase.

I use Minus 33 midweight and Expedition weight tops and bottoms (Denali Expedition Full Zip top).

I pack in over a mile up and down several steep ridges so lightweight (to pack) is very important to me.

Down to around mid teens even with blood thinners I never wear more than a long john top (low merino content cheap one) and long sleeve T shirt for the walk in and they will be soaked with sweat when I get where I'm going no matter how slow I try to go...going up hill does it.

The mid weight Minus 33 will dry out while on stand, but I just don't like to put other layers on top of a wet base layer..so I pack it with everything else.

The heavy weight (Expedition weight Minus 33) is heavy and adds weight to pack in..I wear the bottoms..don't ever sweat below waist or get hot.

You should do fine with the mid weight minus 33 at your temps and they are real light to carry or wear.

I have the mid weight bottoms and top.    If I were you , I wouldn't bother with the light weight.    When I walk out to hunt a lot of times I will pack all my layers and only wear the mid weight top to the stand.  And that seems to work well even if its quite cold.   I don't have the heavy weight stuff so I can't  help ya there.    You will love this stuff.   I have honestly been wearing mine for weeks off and on without washing it and it doesn't smell at all.

Expedition weight for cold tree stand hunting, but not any type of hunting where you are very active....too warm

Thanks for the input.  Looks like a Midweight top is in order. Sounds like that weight will fit well somewhere in my layering needs through the season.  I will have to see if it is the best weight for what i ideally want if such a thing exists. Seems the auction site is the cheapest place to get it. Free shipping so looks like i am really not out anything getting one piece at a time to get a better idea of what will work best.

I have both mid and expedition weight tops and mostly just use the mid weight.  The expedition is great when the temps really drop,  but too warm for a lot of walking.

Their midweight is a 230 grams per square meter weight.  That's pretty average in the industry for a mid weight.

My experience with Minus 33 merino is that it's itchier than a lot of others, but it's also quite a bit cheaper.  For base layers, Ibex is my first pick, followed by Smartwool then Icebreaker.

In October in Montana for treestand hunting, I wear an Ibex Indie Crew for a base layer  http://shop.ibex.com/Apparel/Mens-Long-Sleeve/Indie-Crew-II  once I'm on stand, I put on a 320 weight Icebreaker Classic quarter zip on over that.  Unless it's real windy, I'm good down to 30 something.

Also I would recommend the quarter zip top .  Nice to be able to regulate  a little bit.
