Need some quick guidance on some arrows
« on: December 28, 2013, 12:39:00 AM »
I have been reading through all the Arrow Dynamics threads trying to figure out how to have some arrows made up.  I am still not quite sure on what to do ....

Bear grizzly recurve
58# at 28"
Draw length 27"

AD Trads or Trad lites cut to 29" or 28" with 200 grain broadheads up front?

Worried the arrows will be too stiff.

Trying to get around 500 grains per arrow.
Maybe try the hammerheads?

Any thoughts would be appreciated as I have no idea what I am doing.

Thanks,

J

I've never had the opportunity to shoot the ADs and my bows are generally 10# lighter than yours, so I would just offer a general suggestion.

Our local Trad shop will sell a minimum of 1/2 doz arrows, but they will work all day long with you getting them right. I would purchase 1/2 doz of what seemed likely to work, leave them full length and, if I wanted to be shooting 200gr points, load them up with that. The shop would then fletch one shaft and leave the others bare. I'd shoot a fletched and bare shaft and they would cut them back until I started getting proper flight. Then have them fletch up the remaining shafts and go home and do any fine tuning necessary.

I can hear guys saying "My shop would never do that for me" and you may be right. I feel really lucky to have a shop like that near me. On the other hand, ask them. You might be surprised what they will do if they know they will have a sale of a dozen following the initial testing.

An alternative would be the excellent Easton "Axis Traditionals" in .500 spine with the supplied 75 grain inserts and 145-175 grain points, this would get you 490 to 520 grains total in a 28" arrow. I would start longer and bareshaft, cutting off a 1/4" at a time until you get SLIGHTLY weak, then fletch and fine tune with brace height and/or strike plate thickness.

Trads should spine well but be trad black shaft is 355gr, trad lites black are 305gr but I think would be weak in spine. Lites are to weak for me with [email protected] & 54#@29.5 and 200gr point stock insert.

You can go with test kit from 3rivers

Hey damascusdave,

I was shooting some .400 spine easton axis arrows cut at 29" with 125 or 145 grain field points.

Edited my post above.
AD trad blacks full length, stock inserts, 200 gr points 4x4" fletch are around 550gr if I remember correctly. On vacation or would weight them for you. No experience with the hammerhead.

If you want to shoot a AD shaft check out the ptp shaft thru nitrostinger site, less gpi and skinny like the axis. Just started playing with these and the green(350 spine) work well with my above mentioned bows and with 200gr tips are right at 500gr. Have some of the gold(300 spine) coming so can up point weight for the soon to arrive big jim 1 1/2" VPA 300gr. Should be awesome setup.

Katman - probably closer to 600 gr?
AD Trad blacks full length are 380-390 gr w insert and nock.
Mine finish around 575 grains with a 175 gr VPA up front.
They would be around  600 with a 200 up front.

Sometimes we miss the obvious...why not simply call Arrow Dynamics and ask them...that is one advantage of buying products from a smaller American company

Tedd, I think your correct, thanks, like I said going from memory and on vacaction, to much red wine, 3rivers says ad trad black 355gr.

Dave, I have conversed with Glenn at nitrostinger and he thought the green(350) would be to stiff, but bareshaft shows weak, broadheads hit with field points, amazing shafts.

Anyway the ad trads and lites would be over 500gr with 200gr points since they list the lites only 48gr lighter.

I would not cut the AD shafts at all.

The way to get carbons spined is to add or take off weight in front.

I buy the heaviest spine they make and add weight til they fly right.

You'll also find them extraordinarily tolerant arrows and will work in a wider variety of bow weights once you've set them up than other shafts I've worked with
