Va. TG'ers...Massanutten hunting?
« on: January 03, 2014, 09:13:00 PM »
I just spent the last week down at Massanutten on vacation....

Of course, being who I am, I'm always on the lookout for deer and the sign they leave behind....while skiing and participating in several other activities I've seen a lot of sign.

Big rubs all up and down the slopes, lots of deer in the lowland farm fields on the way to Harrisonburgh and back.

I've seen terrain that remind me of the Vermont Mountains, farms in Missouri, my home state of NY....and even some areas that remind me of MT a bit....really a varied and beautiful part of the country!

Any Tg'ers live and hunt this area...just curious??

My family has owned land that borders the Shenandoah National Park about 15 miles east of Massanutten for 40 years.  All of our land is steep and wooded. Lots of hard woods, squirrels, deer, with turkey and bear.

It is beautiful country with abundant game.

I have a friend from the area who's family helped build it. He is a traditional bowhunter that has registered here. Maybe this will lure him out    ;)

Sean,
Its time for your first post, time to get in here    :bigsmyl:

Curt, I live just 30 minutes from Massanutten!

I know a guy who killed a 170" deer with his bow on that mountain a few years ago. Plenty of BIG bears there also.

Thanx for the info so far fellas....really a diverse area.

Rugged, rugged mountains....with beautiful farms down low on the drive to Harrisonburgh....and about everything in between....beautiful even at this time year when the landscape is barren.

With this cold weather the deer were all over late afternoon.

I can only imagine how beautiful it is during the fall hunting season!!!

Allan, if we ever get back down this way, Cade and I will definitely look you up bud!  Heck I wish I'd have posted this a couple days ago, I would like to have shook your hand...dang!

Would have maybe liked to have stretched a string or two on you lefties as well since we didn't bring a bow with me    :campfire:

I was thinking the same thing Curt. b   :archer:

A good friend of mine has a taxidermy shop within 5 minutes of Massanutten. I was at his shop a couple days ago. Some of the bucks he gets in are simply amazing!

Curt,
I live near Massanutten and know you might see alot of big deer there but hunting on the resort is not possible unless you live there or work there. They have designated areas on the west side people hunt and when the pressure below gets to the deer they head to the resort area. Certainly are some P&Yers in the area.
I've been a member of a bow club on the west side in Keezletown since '84 and have killed several decent but not huge deer on club property. Have seen several real nice bucks but just not clear shots or too far.
If you come back to the area and want to shoot maybe the Charlottesville boys and I can meet up and shoot some at the club. Would be a priveledge to host some good shooters-maybe pick up some pointers.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

Thanks fellas....if I ever get back down I will definitely let you guys know!

I waited till the last day I was there to post this thread.....I just had a feeling that if I did it any earlier, I'd be too tempted and be pulled away from the family too much.

Next time, if we do get back down, I'll plan ahead   ;)
