Gold Tips from Big Jim - What spine?
« on: January 12, 2014, 07:38:00 PM »
I have a new PSA Widow coming 53# at 27 (give or take the 2#).  I would like to get some of the blem gold tips from Big Jim before he runs out.  Not ideal to order before being able to shoot and see what the bow likes but I would like to take advantage of the great deal.  These would be my first carbon arrows (after years of wood and some alum) so I'm not abel to make a good judgement on spine.

So, I would like recommendations on spine with a 125 - 145 head and 100 insert, please.

Thanks for the help.

I think the 55/75"s would work for you with the heavy weight you are using up front. I tuned a 53# @ 27 Bob Lee recurve a while back and that's almost the exact weight I had up front. They have some guys on here that are experts at this so I would wait for a confirmation. I could be wrong.

I would go with the 35/55 for your setup.  I shoot #50 at 27 out of both a Shrew and a Centaur using 15/35's with 140 grain tips.  They work very well.

Although I've heard some say you have to go stiffer for a BW, my bet would stll be 35/55's for your set up. Leave them a bit long to start as length is also critical with carbon. I would also check directly with Big Jim. He'll steer you in the right direction.

Like BAK, I go down to 1535's with some bows up to 48#.

The 27" draw and plus or minus 2#s are the trump cards. 53# @ 28" is definately 5575 on a widow.

If it ends up at 51# and you draw 27"s, your likely to need 3555's.

At any rate, If it were me, and chose to buy before I knew the draw weight, I guess I would go for the 5575's and leave them long until you can tune. The 225g up front will help some.
                   OR
you could get the 3555's and always build the rest out if they were too week.
thanks, bigjim

Thanks Jim,

based on your post, I think I'm best staying with the wood for now and waiting unitl the bow is here and I have all the variables.
