Self bow wood harvesting.

I have got my eye on an Osage orange tree that lives on my property. The question I have is when is the best time to cut the tree. I know it will take time to season so I figure should get on with it. Also wondering how long to cut the logs. Any advice will be greatly  appreciated.

Cut now into 6' logs and seal the ends. Split at least in half in a week or two. In another week or 2 split into staves and either remove the bark and sapwood and seal the back or leave the bark on and spray it with an insecticide to prevent borers from eating once they hatch.

I'll look back through my issues, but I remember TBM had a good article on it. It may have spanned 3 issues. It covered cutting and seasoning the staves.

Pat, what is the best way to seal logs? Also do I keep them stored inside or out?

Bill,you can use wood glue, shelac, paint etc to seal them with. I keep most of mine stored inside my shed/shop just to keep them out of the weather.

My father in law used plane ole Elmer's white glue to seal the ends of his rose bushes after trimming. I'm also sure log home companies or suppliers would have sealer and insecticidal applicants. I'd love some progressive threads on your build. Something I really want to do.

Use Elmer's carpenter glue or, my favorite, spray shellac. It's quick and not as messy.

Store out of the elements in a dry location.

Seal them with the above mentioned products. I also prefer shellac(spray can variety).
 Store the staves out of the weather and off the ground.
