Help school me on wood arrows!!!!
« on: January 25, 2014, 10:23:00 AM »
I have a Robertson Mystical gonna show up anyday now and was toying around with the idea of shooting wood arrows out of it.  The bow is 55@27 and I have a 27" draw.  I would like to shoot a 135-145 grain point.  Can you guys recommend a good spine to start with?  Also about arrow woods.  I would like a strong arrow, but still be able to build a 550'sh grain arrow.  Any sugestions?  Thanks.

Toby

Toby call Steve at surewood if you want to build your own. Or David at Wilderness Arrows if you want finished. They could help you figure out spine and such. Surewood shafts set the bar with wood shafts. There are a bunch of tutorials here, just use the search function. Wood arrows are cool! Good luck!

I'm not sure how close to center the bow is, looks like nearly center cut... also don't know how long you like your arrows cut, to BOP.
With a 27" draw, lets say arrows 28" to BOP, my guesstimate is in the 60/65# range with those points. I'm just getting things rolling here, I'm no seasoned expert... but been shooting woods for some years, building 'em for a couple, and thinking your bow looks similar to my wife's Toelke.
As far as choice of wood - doug fir. At your arrow length, you should be able to get shafts at the lighter end of the range in your spine that will total out around 550 grains. I've been sealing our shafts with Tung oil, rather than dipping in poly, to keep weight down, also. You can buy Surewood's in a 30" shaft length, and save a few dollars doing so. Spruce will be easier to keep in your weight range, but I find them less durable than fir for roving.

55-60 should be close with a 145 gr head. I like cedar but it not the toughest.

I'll second the recommendation of Douglass Fir over Cedar...they are a lot tougher, not too much heavier, and a dozen will last you a lot longer based on my experience.  Easy to tune for and they stay straight as well.

I'd start with 60-65 cut to 28" BOP...but with that particular bow not being center shot, you maybe would need a 55-60 spine. Maybe someone else with same bow will chime in.

If you're planning to make them yourself, go Surewood, but if you want some already made up take a look at Wilderness.  Snag uses Surewood shafts and you won't be sorry with his product.  I did some horse trading with him and the first couple of dozen he made for me are awesome.  Can't wait to get the rest. The best part is that when they leave the bow they always land where they hit! Now that's a recipe for success.

That's cut 1/8 before center (or you can't shoot it in the longbow safari) If you make your own get a test kit from surewood. If you want ready made just call snag at wilderness arrows.

Some Surewood Shafts in 55/60's cut to 28" bop should work well for you Toby.

Allen, had another dozen with me today at the TAO Banquet. Sorry you couldn't make it. I'll get them to you soon.

Thanks guys.  Think I'll order some 55-60 from Surewood and go from there.

No rush Dave, I'll pick them up the next time we get together at the range.  Do you by chance know who won the Classic I donated for the banquet?

Mellonhead: If you are using a FF type string and you want point weight more than 125 gn you may need 60/65. Surewood sells test kits so you can make sure you will have the correct spine.

I have one that is a  couple of ponds stiffer at 26 inches.  With 160 heads it likes shafts from 57 to 62.  With 145 up front it likes 53 to 57.  These are. All 27" bop with Grizzly broad heads.
