diy axis deer

hello fellow gangers,
i know that texas offers some 'exotic' hunts and one of them is the axis and fallow deer hunts. but i was wondering if there is any place that is a diy for either species (individually) or both combined? im more interested in the axis but seems how both are new to me i would be happy to hunt either one with trad equipment. thanks again for all your help.

I dont think you will be able to do a DIY unless you pay for it on private land. (Pay for access on someones land.) I don't know of any public places that have Axis or Fallow and if there is I think it would be over hunted. If you find some place please let me know.

Lake Amistad and Languna Acosta are the only public lands that hold decent exotic populations.  Both are hard hunting; everything sticks, bites or stings. Neither have axis.  Amistad has mouflon, audad, and the occational black buck.  Acosta has nilgai.  I wish there were more public land opportunities.  Homer Martin Ranch, a private place in Mason, has free range axis. For private free range land look west and north of San Antonio (Mason and Rocksprings)

ah ok...so im guessing that to access these lands they charge an arm and leg?

Here in Hawaii a few of our islands are inhabited by axis.  I would think Lana'i is your best bet for diy.  In fact our yearly state hunt on Lana'i is going down in about a week.  We also have mouflon, pigs, goats, and on Kaua'i there are blacktail deer.

Try looking up Barker Ranch, out of Rocksprings in Edwards county. They have some semi DIY hunts for axis and blackbuck.

The Junction area, Kimble County, has some of the best axis hunting you will find; there are giants.  Black buck are not uncommon, and there are pigs too.  It will be hot, but the best time to hunt the big axis is July.  This is also when their capes are the prettiest.  However, if you did schedule an axis hunt to coincide with an opportunity at whitetail you'll have a great time, but the early summer is the best time to get one of the big guys.

Not at all!  If you have a current hunting license it's only $20 to hunt Amistad, and that permit is good for the season.  My Dad has hunted there several times and said it's challenging, but a lot of fun.
