Wood tuning question.
« on: February 15, 2014, 09:39:00 PM »
I ordered some Douglas Fir shafts to try on my switch to wood arrows.  I ordered 60-65# spine shafts.  I was hoping to tune these up with some 145 grain heads.  I am up to 220 grain heads  and they are still showing stiff.  I am shooting bare shafts with fletched shafts and the bare shafts are always 4-5" to the left.  I went to Stu's calculator and put in the numbers for the carbons that tuned up good with the same bow.  I then switched to wood arrows and it says I need a 275 grain point to get them to match my carbons.  Does this sound right?  Here are the specs.

Robertson Mystical 55@27 right hand bow
I draw 27"
60-65# Douglas Fir shafts 28.5 BOP
220 grain points now still showing stiff

How close to center shot is your bow?
If it's outside of center shot you may need a weaker spine than what your draw weight would suggest. For example, in my straight limbed longbow that draw 58# and are about 3/16" out from center, I shoot 50 - 55# spine arrows.  I also only use 125 grain heads.

55-60 probably would have worked but these should come around with all that point weight.

Those bows are 1/8" from enter plus strike plate.

Did you raise the nock point a hair when you switched to wood?

Ya shootin a FF string?

I have one of those bows and they dont require a overly stiff arrow. Mine is 61 @ 29 and it shoots 30" 65-70 arrows well. With a 10 strand D97 string.

What the BH set at?

I did raise the nock height.  It is a FF string.  Right now my BH is 7.125.  I am planning on lowering the BH today and trying it.  I did up my point weight to 250 grains this morning and tried a few shots.  It seemed to help, but need to shoot more to find out for sure.  I have been going up about 10 grains at a time and it has improved with every addition so far.  I really didn't want this heavy of an arrow but I will say that this thing is whisper quiet right now with a 700 grain arrow!  The Carbons that tuned up good are a 500 Beman Classic with 100 grain insert, 200 grain point cut to 29".  Thanks for the input guys.

how thick is your side plate?

you could peel it off and try it, it would move your center shot in and if your arrows are close to tuned you wont hear a thing.

Side plate is .03 thick.  I just lowered my BH to 6.75.  That seemed to really help.  I am still showing slightly nock high, but I'm pretty sure I was born with a nock high issue!!!!  So now I need to decide weather to to keep going with the 60-65's or order some lighter spined shafts.  I really don't have a problem with the 700 grain arrows, but finding 250 grain 2 blade heads seems to be a problem.  The bow is very quiet the way it is right now.  I like the benefits of the higher FOC and heavier arrow weight, but it makes finding glue on componets a little trickier and more pricey.

I hear ya with the nock high...lol

Are all your arrows cut to that length?

I would see if they would split a dozen 50/55 & 55/60 and see how they tune up.

700g is overly heavy IMO, that bow will be just as quiet at 10gpp.

Are your fletched shafts flying straight and going where you want them?  If so, why bother tinkering farther.

I shoot 60-65# and heavier woodies (11/32 cedar) tipped with 125 grain heads out of 50# (@28,my draw length) Robertson Primal Styks with good results.  Robertson longbows are cut about 1/8-inch proud of center.  The side plate leather can sometimes be a little thick, so you might try a thinner piece.  Those shafts should shoot well for you though, even with a lot less weight up front.
