Tell me about DIY Javelina Hunting

I live in GA but am considering planning a DIY Javelina hunt to Texas, Arizona, or New Mexico.  We would be driving out, car camping and wanting to hunt spot and stalk on public land, or pay a trespass fee to hunt on a ranch.  Tag availability and terrain have to be conducive to a good hunt.  We definitely want open land with some elevation, and "stalkable" habitat.  Bonuses like upland bird or rabbit hunting would be awesome too.  We would want to go in December, January, or February.  Thank you so much for any help.  

The desert southwest is just a place I would love to experience and javelina offer a great way to do that.

Arizona is where I'd go for that criteria.  The Jan season near Tucson also offers quail hunting. It was so good one year we went and bought a couple of cheap shotguns to get in to it.  LOL

Go hunt with Kent Ostrem! You are basically paying a trespass fee to hunt on an incredible ranch. Kent is super helpful and his camp is top notch. We had 9 guys kill 6 pigs in four days. I didn't get any opportunities myself but would go back in a heartbeat. The mountains of West Texas are one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

Lots of options, but I did Arizona this year and had a great time. It's not a gimme, and you need to hunt hard,  but is very doable and best of all is in some fabulous and completely unique country.  The weather is fantastic as well.   Baiting is not allowed,  so it is strictly spot and stalk.

Are you a member of PBS? There is a group being put together for a membership hunt next January.

The Professional in the PBS name is commonly misunderstood.  All that it means is that members take bowhunting seriously to the point that it is a main focus of their hunting life.  We let ethics guide us in our hunting, and for a PBS member bowhunting defines who we are and what we love to do.

Certainly some PBS members make a living doing what they love, but the vast majority of us are just regular people who love bowhunting more than any other sport - just like you!

Anyone who loves bowhunting and would like to see its traditions and challenges continue into the future should seriously take a look at PBS.  And it's a great place to meet people who think and feel exactly like you do!
