Massey Finish Experience

After struggling to get Poly to stick to fiberglass bows, I have begun using the Massey Finish. I have been mixing it somewhere between 6:1 and 20:1 (eyeballing it here folks...) with 2-part delayed set epoxy (60 min, I think).

It goes on nice and seems tough (2 coats so far).

But, it appears that the epoxy can be easily removed by the acetone. I found this out the hard way in a small area.

Anyone else experience removal of Massey Finish with Acetone?

Am I reallyadding additional layers with subsequent applications?

Should I be more precise with the ratio?

I don't think it matters too much but most folks use 1 epoxy to 5 or maybe up to 10 parts acetone or M.E.K..
If you get it up to 1 to 20 mixture it would not put much on with one pass.

I have never tried to take any off after it dried so don't know but suspect acetone would put the hurt on most finishes.

I use the 2-ton epoxy on arrows--great stuff.  Put one syringe of epoxy in a baby-food jar, stir it up, add a little acetone, stir again, fill the jar with acetone, stir again.

It seems to be putting on thick enough layers, and I don't see a problem so far (it filled the grain nicely).

Oh well...we'll see.

Anyone else with thoughts? Seen Acetone remove Massey finish?

I've never had acetone remove the epoxy and I've done a couple hundred knives with it.  I've only used the Devcon 2 ton epoxy from walmart.  It takes 12- 24 hours between coats.  

I suspect your problem is the type of epoxy your using.  Chad

I'd go towards the 6:1 ratio.  Wipe it on in 1 pass, don't try to rewipe to smooth brush or rag marks.  Let it CURE for 8 hours.  It may be dry right away but epoxy takes time to cure.  Heat helps.  Do at least 5 coats.

Like John said, don't thin it down so much and let it CURE.  It does sound like you have a problem with the epoxy though... that stuff does have a shelf life and when it goes bad it'll never cure.

I'm not sure of the brand, but I just ran out (3 coats so far).

Seems pretty thick. I think I have enough on for my liking. I'm going to add 1-2 coats of Poly to kill the shine. As annoying asthat shine is, I really like the "wet look" and clarity of the wood underneath.

Well...I guess I should have looked at this site after I got home last night...

The up-shot is that this is an "experimental" bow in many ways!
