String confusion
« on: February 28, 2014, 09:06:00 PM »
Hoyt excel, BM med limbs, 45#, 8 - 8.75 brace height and hoyt recommends a 61.25 string length.
Lancaster states AMO length, which is 64 and I am assuming the string would be around 60". 3rivers sells by length?    So do I just toss it in the wind and get a 62 inch string or go with the AMO length? And I want a decent string but all I see is strand count?, different types of material? , Flemish, non Flemish , fast flight, double loop, continuos loop, so on, so on.  HELP.... Please,  joe

Hi Joe...do you have a string on it now that is the right length? If so, the best way is to go by actual length. Get with one of our string building sponsers on here, go to the site or better yet call them and follow their instructions on how to measure your string. Talk to these guys, they really know what they are doing and will fix you up. SBD builds a good string and are great to deal with.

I would order from someone selling buy actual string length . I've ordered by amo length before from Lancaster and they sent me a 60" string for a 60" inch bow....no good. But like 4dogs said your better off buying from a string maker on here. Doesn't cost much more and you can get exactly what you want. Plus you can talk to them directly. I use 1st class Flemish strings myself. Good strings and he got them to me quick.

I'd go with Hoyt's recommendation.  AMO says 3" shorter (measured under 100# tension), recurve or longbow.

Flemish or endless is mostly a matter of personal choice.  I make both and shoot both--they both work.  "Traditionally" (pun intended) that type bow would get an endless string.

Strand count...I like a happy medium.  Don't like to go too low or too high.  How many strands depends on the material and draw weight.

Material...currently I'm really liking the new BCY-X.  Durable, stable, quiet.  For 45#, I'd go with 18-20 strands (it's a very small strand), if Flemish pad the loops to 24 strands.

It can get pretty confusing, but strings are really pretty simple.

Thanks gents, no string on it now and going to a string maker sounds like a good idea.
