It's about time
« on: September 18, 2007, 12:17:00 PM »
Well, the autumn breeze has begun its magic on our collective physches, once again stirring the juices that turn us into that predatory species known as bowhunters.

The broadheads are being sharpened and resharpened to the enth degree; the bowstrings are waxed and burnished, and the leather goods are treated and ready for the first sprinkle of the season.

Even the air feels different.  Here in the northeast section of the US it is dryer and more comfortable.  The mornings are more chilling and require a light jacket or sweater, and the wool plaid is looking more and more desirable. The hickories are shedding their delectable morsels and the gray squirrels are hustling to gather them as they hit the ground.  The time is drawing nigh.

In many areas, bow seasons have already begun.  However, here in Pennsylvania, we must wait another week and three-quarters.
It's a time to anticipate and prepare;  a time to reminisce and ruminate about seasons past.  It's a time to rekindle those friendships with hunting buddies and stir the mind's campfire embers.

This will be my forty-second year of bowhunting and I'm as excited about it as if it were my third or fourth.  Perhaps the aging mind likes to take repose in those seasons past and recreate them once more.  It's the brain's way of destressing the body and soul and bringing a sense of being back to the hunting archer.  A sweet reminisce for sure.

I wish you all a great season; one that you will remember for more than just a deer hanging on the meat pole.  May it be one of sweet remembrance, and one of creation for future memories.  May you have success in your heart and a pleasant peace in your soul.  Be safe and be ever conscious of what you represent when you are in the hunting woods with your bow and arrows.  Be true to your own expectations and take care.

As always George, very nice. And right back at ya.

I say it every year and I'll say it again this year. This is going to be the best season I've ever had.

As we age... as health challenges come along... as life happens... we can still enjoy the privilege of being in the outdoors.

I look forward to the months ahead.  To sit and watch the leaves, to spend time with wildlife big and small, to have time to reminisce about the friends with whom we have shared all this- it is a balm for the soul.

Here is to a great and safe season for each of you.  Oh, yes, I even hope some you get a chance at taking some game!

Enjoy the gift of creation this fall!

This will be season twenty nine for me. Every year becomes more important than the last.

Thank you for your kind words. To all of you out there I wish the same. And to all of you out there, I WILL be conscious of who and what I represent while I am out there.

I may not kill, but I will certainly be a Bowhunter, and I will enjoy every minute of it.

Last week we raced airplanes at my place and lost three pilots.  I was out at one of the sites today and started thinking about my times back east.  I don't know why, but i did. The smell of Carolinas marshes, the sweet smell of PA woodslots, the sound of acorns the size of my thumb falling in the DE mornings.  I thought about my sliding down a tree in my Loggy on a foggy morning in VA.  And then I looked at the mangled wreck of a jet that would probably fit in the bed of a pick up.  If you can hunt, you are blessed, and should tap into the memory maker that hunting is to us.  Wish I was back there as our season has been over for two weeks, and the thought of never hunting again is hard to take.  Luck and memories to you all.
