First Post - Less than exciting
« on: March 14, 2014, 03:02:00 PM »
Hello all,

Just got into traditional archery a few months ago and have been absolutely hooked. Been shooting an inexpensive takedown recurve and decided I needed to class myself up a bit... so I bought a 1969 Bear Grizzly recurve.

It is in great shape, and I am super pleased with the purchase. But, I've been looking at what the proper string length would be for this older bow, suspecting that age may make a difference. Having worked in a customer service type industry for a long time, I called Bear archery... twice... and got two different answers. One said do the typical 4" shorter than AMO, another said do 3" shorter than AMO. Lovely.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with older Grizzlies?

Also, I've been looking at some of the handmade Flemish twist strings out there and was wondering if anyone had a specific maker they could recommend.

Thanks a ton!

1969 would be 56" bow and 52" string, great bow in my opinion.

You do not want to use a fast flite string ... I'm not sure if sbd makes Dacron...

Also check with champion custom archery a sponsor...

I have a 68" bear grizzly with the same specs.

I use a flemish twist string and like my brace height at about 8".

Check with SBD, he should steer you in the right direction.

Your bow should be marked AMO xx.  If so, the string WILL, not should, be 3" shorter (under tension) than that number.  This is not a rule of thumb, or I usually do something.  This IS the AMO standard.  3" shorter than the AMO length as marked on the bow.

Great bow!  Welcome to TG.  As you can see with your call to Bear and on this thread there are some differences of opinion.

I'd go with Cyclic Rivers recommendation.  His bow is exactly the same specs and manufacturer as yours, and he has one in his hand.

I used to, but I sold it.  I kind of regret that.  Sweet little bows.  They do tend to like to be braced in that 8-8.5" range

No experience with a 56" Grizzly but for my (2) 58" 71-72 Grizzly's a 3" shorter string would not work well at all. Like ceme24 & Norminator said, mine definitely get unhappy when they are braced below 8".
