Heavy Bow....to me anyways
« on: March 15, 2014, 08:19:00 PM »
Just picked up a Sauk Valley "Spirit" recurve in 66# at 28". I pull 29 so Im at 68 or therebouts. I have to say this ol boy hits hard with heavy arrows at 20 yds. I was amazed to tell the truth. Now to get used to that poundage I guess. I am thinking of working up till I can hold it for 30-45 sec or so without giving out? Any suggestions on working up, exercises etc? Im a big guy but am 59 yrs young. I can shoot maybe 40 arrows out of it now. Thanks for the advice in advance!

If you can shoot 40 arrows out of it while coming to full anchor with a slight pause before release I'd say your fine.  Just keep shooting it and you'll build your endurance no problem.

I shoot a predator recurve 65@28, and if you can hold 68# at full draw for 30-45 sec, well my hats off to you, lol.

Hold it for 45 seconds while taking a shot? That's almost half as long as a compound shooter takes!    ;)

I used to shoot a 77# recurve. Went from a 55 to a 61 to a 67 to a 77.
Best way to get used to it is to shoot it. You will build the muscle needed in no time.
That 77# broke a limb and when I had new limbs I had 70# limbs made then when I started shooting a longbow I started at 63# so I could practice more and longer sessions. Liked the way the bow shot so Mich I had another one made identical. Then I had a ton of arrows already for the 63# I just stayed at that weight for my next 2 longbows I had made. So now pretty much all I shoot is 63# lol.
But the 77# was a shooter and didn't taken long to get adjusted to.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to draw, hold for a few seconds, then let down slow without shooting... Maybe do that every ten shots or so...

Thanks for the advice.I can shoot in my basement (bout 13 yds) and I think just working on a pull, hold, let down slow will probably work. Probably every other day at my age. Ill get a picture of it posted after I pay for it Monday. It sure spits big fat arrows a lot faster than I would have believed without seeing it myself.
